Should people buy and reuse models from those who previously used them?
Case in point, somebody bought Gumpai's dog model, well known for many reasons.

It can't happen without the previous owner agreeing, so I don't really see any negatives to it. If someone is willing to spend money for a used model and someone else is willing to sell it, nobody else should have any say in that transaction.
Now whether the new person succeeds with that model is a different story, but we've seen time and time again that a good model doesn't guarantee success. So if the complaint is about it being "unfair" I don't think that applies either. If they deserve to succeed, they will succeed.

i think the reason it hits weird with vtubing is the relatively small time vtubing, and most vtubers especially, have been around, aswell as the more direct nature of streaming in general.
in theory, what really is the difference between this, and say, movie/show/anime series or remakes where the same character is played by a different actor? not much.
in practice though, most of the times the above is successful enough time has passed for it to be understandable due to age issues or just generational gaps why it needs to be done, and/or the original story itself is so old you see no one as the 'owner' of it.
but with vtubing, theres generally just no time gap and a much more personal feeling to the 'actor' controlling the model.
that, and lets be honest, 95%+ of vtubers do basically no kayfabe, so there is no 'character' to take over, only a face, further making it feel strange to see someone else take it over.

that said, i see nothing actually wrong with it if both parties agree.

If the model came from a 1view/2view with barely any notoriety then nobody would really care. Gumpai is a different kettle of fish. Whoever bought this model will have high expectations made upon them and if they don't deliver then people will question why they even bought this model.

I am open to model resales if the model didn't work out and could be better used by the right kind of person. A good example would be the titty monster jellyfish, it flopped hard for the original pilot but if sold to a coomer Fansly kind of girl, would easily be a money maker for sure.

In theory, it's less waste on the efforts of the artist and rigger for a 3D model and actually extracts value from something that the prior actor/actress behind the model can no longer use for whatever reason, graduation or financial or etc. As conventions stand though, no one is open yet to a model having multiple actors/actresses behind them, even if you can do it and most of the examples we have from the industry's history has been done with malicious intent. And there is no incentive for artists and riggers to allow for the practice to propagate since that reduces the demand for their work and it's not exactly like especially now that times are good right now for that. So I expect that to continue until AI can actually do a better job than what we have seen from Vtuber models attempting to look like that. But AI is already making things a bit cheaper in the art department where using it for concept art reference and reducing back and forth iteration time.

It helps though, and when every advantage kind of counts when Vtubing is somewhat tough to break through now, having models be a one and done use type thing per incarnation makes the barrier higher for aspiring people wanting to get into the industry, for better or worst.

Unless there is a good, solid reason for casting a new actor, there is always a shitstorm among fanbase, so it's hardly unique to vtubing.

She basically had destroyed any goodwill she had with her fans by switching to the jellyfish model and then lost a big chunk of viewers as well as her income on Bilibili because it was too NSFW for China.
Plus she had dumb reasons and lashed out on anyone who criticised her for it. She would have got less shit about it had she just made an alt account and tested the waters. After she switched back to the panda she wiped out any trace of the jellyfish model.
The problem is despite wanting to chase clippers for clips, the clipfags only cared about clipping certain people like VShojo and those in the whore clan, what she really needed was a fan clipper like Shondo has with Saali.
