The general consensus seems to be that viewer conversion from one format to another is pretty bad. You can see this pretty directly on Youtube, where you've got tons of channels with >1M views average on shorts and <150k on videos. So diversifying is beneficial in that your running multiple odds at once, but that does not seem to be as transferable between sites as networking.

If you don’t get good engagement from the start your videos will end up in algo hell. The more videos that don’t get views or likes the less likely your new videos will be pushed. If you take a long break ask your friends, real life acquaintances and networked contacts to help give your content views and likes or else your new content will be pushed less. It doesn’t matter how good it is. It will not be pushed if there is no engagement.

Getting 4-5 likes and a couple full views within the first couple hours of long form or a couple tens of likes and 50% or greater engagement on short form over the course of a day depending on the algo’s push. Those kinds of things should get the ball rolling. For shorts try to get 90-100% view retention. If you’re starting out go for shorter shorts around 15-20 seconds. After that it all relies on your content’s quality and the mercy of the algos.
