vspofes could be different, but without them forcing collabs between the jp and en side to make the fanbases mix and I don't think they should, it's not the vspo spirit to force things upon them, I can see most en fans not making the effort to go unless they already planned to make a trip to japan

I was one and yeah, didn't go solely for her. But I would actually had planned a JP trip to do other things and attend VSPO fes too if something like that was up for grabs.
But besides that, I think merch orders and something like Offkai would give them a good idea where they are at fan-wise right now. I agree that they had to build up a fanbase from the ground up for EN and probably CN too. But things at least seem to be more or less on a faster trajectory for CN as they will be at a Chinese con later this month and doing M&Gs.

Nah, Bilibili is a giant barrier so they had to start from scratch there too but if you're talking about existing fans of VSPO moving over to CN and the bigger population there, yeah, I can see that. They are also more readily accepting of anime/manga and their pro scene isn't as established or grounded as in the West so CN is probably growing the same as JP and using the same strategy.
Cons are harder because a lot of things are outside the control of the people organizing the event inside the con so things don't get finalized until near the event. I think for Offkai, VSPO EN were announced as guests like 2 months before but the schedule didn't release until 2 weeks before the con. Them streaming the event online softened the blow though.
