A post about vtubing in /asp/ is like an oasis in a desert. Youtube is good if you’re big already but if you’re small you’re better off with Twitch. Indies get fooled into starting on Youtube because most major corpos stream there but those corpos are also running large scale marketing campaigns. Starting on Twitch leads to slow growth over time. Starting on Youtube is a gamble because you’re competing not just with live content but video content too and there is less discoverability.

There currently seems to be two meta strategies:
streaming to both ttv and yt at the same time and saving the vods automatically on yt for convenience OR sticking to streaming on ttv but uploading curated vods/highlights/clips/shorts on yt to run the algo gamba. the first expands live viewership and the second expands offline/asynchronous viewership. >>102210069 is also right; ttv rewards consistency much more readily than yt. yt also punishes you with less shares if you deviate from your upload schedule or change up your content from video to video. ttv is more forgiving in that aspect.

I personally think so. Think of the person who sees a curated video of yours and wants to see more without the aid of the algorithm. Literally clicking on your profile. Maybe the video's 10 minutes. And has an eye-catching thumbnail. Do you want them to have to wade through a slew of unedited vods? That's administrative labor you're thrusting onto your potential regular content consumers. You would need to lean on curated playlists at the very least.
There's also the fact that yt most likely has some notion of a content credit score. How much they're willing to bat for you in the attention economy. That's where they do the carrot and the stick with consistency and content that's engaged with. If you have multiple accounts with different credit scores, tanking in one aspect doesn't diminish the others. If your gaming clips do well, great! If your roleplay videos do well, great! And if any of those underperform, it doesn't impact the good performers. I think that yt livestreams (and yt livestream vods) and shorts are treated separately because they have separate tabs, but I don’t have much strong support for this and I don’t think yt won’t fiddle with this.
If you’re planning to be a one-trick pony, I say keep the one account. Otherwise, spread your content across several themed topical accounts so audiences that like that can get funneled to you without yt acting as gatekeeper.

highly reccomend multistreaming, if you're small there's no reason twitch will punish you even if you combine chats, i've been getting away with it for a little while and the convenience of having your vods uploaded to yt automatically plus live views counting towards vod views there's really no reason not to. if your pc/internet can't handle streaming to both at the same time i reccomend restream, not sure at what point they paygate you but i've been using them for a little while now and i've had only a couple hiccups.

You need a good mic. Not the best mic, only something passable enough not to pop and fuzz on my good quality headphones. Any mid tier podcast mic will do. There have been so many times I've tuned into 1view streams and it's been someone breathing fuzz into a headset mic. Please don't do this. For me.

Multistreaming is the meta now and use youtube for it's strengths which is making edited videos for it and not as a streaming platform. Youtube will grow the more edited content you put into it and just purely streaming on youtube is a huge waste of time since it's hard to grow. I've never seen a vtuber grow just from pure youtube streaming alone and the ones that do find success tend to have videos they make and upload regularly on them.

Discord audio piping in Linux is strange, at least for me. Every time I've tried to stream in a discord channel video, the audio is absent. There are workarounds to use the VOIP instead, but that's going to compress the hell out of it and mix everything to mono. I haven't tried this in the last few months, so maybe there's a recent solution out there, but you might have better luck dual streaming to both ttv and fansly (gated by subscription for the oilers).

It seems consistency is key regardless of what kind of stuff you make, so I'd like to know: what gets you to click on long form vtuber content vs a stream?

Those are two completely different things and types of content.
You shouldn't look at it as YouTube VS Twitch, but rather YouTube AND Twitch.
The only thing to consider is where you wanna stream. Making content on YouTube might translate to more YouTube live viewers than Twitch, but Twitch has better discoverability (at least it's what the main consensus of the thread is, some have had good experiences on YT).

Twitch is not "useless" if you like streaming. What is that you wanna do? Be a streamer? Be a video essay maker? Do both?

Important for me is a) a topic I am interested in - not gonna watch long form content on the Bolivian toilet industry b) appealing thumbnail, not gonna click a long video if it doesn't look like it will be worth my time/decent quality c) good first moments, no mic cracks, no weird tts etc. that will get me to stay beyond five seconds. Everything after that is down to how good you make it, quality, engaging content etc.

Use each platform for their strengths. Twitch is still the number 1 streaming platform and you should be streaming there in order to meet new people and to put your name out into the world. Meanwhile youtube videos gain viewers passively and the more videos you put in and the more your twitch viewers click on them, the better youtube can figure out who to push the videos to. In the end both sites feed each other and doing both helps you grow the most.

It's still good to stream on twitch just to get more eyes on the essay if it ends up flopping in the algorithm. I shill my shit all the time to new viewers if a video I've made is relevant to the conversation at hand, and have ended up getting long term regulars out of first time chatters because they were excited for the video.
Just dual stream, since yt streams are good for filling in gaps between releases so you don't fall out of the algorithm's good graces and all the effort you put into membership content can be essentially blindly applied to subscriber content over on twitch.
