If you just went into some unrelated work straight out of college the same excuse doesn't work as well, I don't know many companies willing to take a chance on someone with an old degree and no relevant experience when they can just hire new grads to fill in junior positions. It's a position that many people that couldn't find a job soon after graduating find themselves in and it can become very hard to find a job the longer it goes, I remember Sleepy talking about her brother being in that sort of position and it took him years to find a job.
