Not gonna lie that sort of situation is very hard to get out of. If you have prior experience in the field you can always chalk up the gap to you being working on different business opportunities and now wanting to come back to your field. If you just went into some unrelated work straight out of college the same excuse doesn't work as well, I don't know many companies willing to take a chance on someone with an old degree and no relevant experience when they can just hire new grads to fill in junior positions. It's a position that many people that couldn't find a job soon after graduating find themselves in and it can become very hard to find a job the longer it goes, I remember Sleepy talking about her brother being in that sort of position and it took him years to find a job.
