The company I used to work for did the same.
They had a yearly Christmas charity event for local children's hospitals and homeless shelters for almost three decades.
Flawless reputation.
Then suddenly they pocketed the money and of course it got out. Turned out the company was in the red, hemorrhaging money every month and the higher ups decided that "borrowing" the charity funds was the right thing to do.
