It's really not weird at all. Management will often feel out how much they can manipulate workers to do things like take on extra tasks for no extra pay and whatever else they can get away with. Zen just doesn't fuck around with that stuff, so they had to keep her happy. Others were more easily pressured, so they pressed that advantage. None of it would be possible if workers talked freely about this stuff with each other, of course. Which is why management creates so much pressure for them not to do so.

I think someone said later that Nyan said not getting help for one of the goals, a Minecraft voice pack, was a listed reason. He was also involved creatively with Michi's debut, which was probably costly.

Best guess, the initial talent contracts were too generous, leading to the company not making enough money off of their initial group. This leads to worse contracts later, which is why so few people joined the company later on. When they try to negotiate for a larger cut later on, talent leaves. Then they're stuck. They can't make money off the people they have, they can't get new talent because their deals aren't good enough.

That's when you saw the contracts tightening up and them getting more restrictive with their talents and some started leaving.
