Is vtubing actually popular popular? Even if there's ~5 million active aggregate fans in the western sphere (massively exaggerating if we want to focus only on the people actively watching and supporting vtubers and not clipwatchers and meme retweeters), there's like a thousand random SEA/Indian youtube channels with more subscribers than that. Feels like a drop in the bucket.
I've always thought vtubing is a very isolated, insular "hobby". It saw the biggest influx of newcomers during COVID but I'm not exactly seeing Holo adverts on billboards or the sides of buses, outside of random big one-off promos like gura singing at the dodgers game most normies can't even break in. Let alone get caught up on all the background/lore between the talents.

I don't think I can go on bros. 2 things recently changed the way I feel about this hobby. One was the baseball stream that made me realize how cringe this hobby is. Two is the realization of how unethical it is to exploit mentally ill/lonely people with parasocial relationships for money.
