I have some understanding on how self hate or shame over ethnic roots can damage a person. My mothers mother (I have never called her grandma) was an absolute bitch and neglected my mom's basic needs after she was born. My biological grandfather took her away from the terrible situation, but when she learned of her mother, she felt a kind of disgust which caused her mental state to cut because she wanted to "get rid" of her mothers "blood".
