Bit of a tangent but I think it goes deeper than that. I think it's biological or at least heavily influenced by biology. I think the compulsion to seek out women that are already in relationships is historically degenerate. Consider the societies humans were in thousands of years ago. Brutal and difficult. Very close tribes.
In that sort of environment, investing your very limited time or resources on a woman that was already claimed by another man would have been extremely perilous. You have to figure of the men that engaged in that behavior, very few of them succeeded in passing their genes onto the next generation for obvious violent reasons. So it stands to reason either something was gained or something was lost from our genes that either inhibited this behavior, or stopped encouraging this behavior among a larger portion of the population. Avoiding taken women could be considered a dominant gene, and pursuing taken women could be considered recessive.
While it's easy to trick our brains into thinking an anime girl we're looking at is available, once we know that she's not biology should kick in. I think this phenomenon is so subconscious that most men aren't aware that it's happening. They can't articulate WHY they immediately lose interest and stop supporting a vtuber that says she has a boyfriend. The malicious assumption by others is always "well, you just wanted to fuck her and you don't actually care about her", but obviously that doesn't paint an accurate picture at all.
