They sub but don't watch. The typical life of a shorts fag is 99.9% or more will watch for 5-60 seconds, maybe sub, then move on and never come back. That's why when they decided to allow that retarded format for streams, so many people were doing it. Putting a retarded format with #shorts in the title put you in the youtube shorts doomscroll, and some people got a significant sub boost from that over the course of a few months, with no change in average viewer level on other streams.
I'm not even a numberfag, this is just my observation and I dropped every vtuber that decided to do those streams beyond an arbitrary threshold, including my former oshi.

I can't watch people that aren't popular because of this. It just feels sad.

As a one view myself I don't worry about the popular games or whatever. I just stream on my days off because I was going to play the games anyway so why not. Sometimes someone talks to me and that's fun.
People are either going to watch or they aren't. Maybe its the wrong time of day, maybe what you're doing isn't popular at the moment. As a streamer you don't know. You just have to put yourself out there.
Overall I'm satisfied with what I do. I don't dare do karaoke because of copyright claims etc but its fun to sing poorly and imagine someone accidentally clicking into it

That's the hobby side of it. Same as the early days, before you could make money from it. I've been streaming on and off since mid 2011. Would do it more but I am the only one in this house that doesn't have a night shift schedule.

i've been burned once watching and interacting with low views, not risking it again.
also once i followed a link from here and was the 5th viewer on the stream and got an acknowledgment right as i was quickly closing it. hopefully that one didn't sting that person too much...

Worst part is that this is just one of the many other vtubers who are not doing well with numbers. I know they probably might not care about them and they might have fun or at least that's what i wanna believe but it still hurts. I used to sub to almost any low view vtubers i saw in my recommends or found on here but there are so many of them i just stopped. I can't anymore.

Hitting it big on entertainment is a mix of luck and talent.
You can be very talented and do a lot of interesting content. But if the algorithm or another huge content creator/chuuba doesn't notice you, that's it, you are forever stuck on 2viewland. Even if you have clippers, if they also get ignored by the algo, there's nothing you can do.

Yeah that is why the people who earn a livable income from vtubing/livestreaming are the extreme outliers. 90%+ are not earning money/making below min wage in their country. The hardest part is getting big enough either through luck, connections, or both. There are some extremely talented/smart people that just don't make the break.

I do remember that phase when even the big corpos, like Hololive, were doing vertical streams. Because big corpos were doing it, I didn't think it was for numbers, I thought it was women being women (women really love the shorts format).

Checking her shorts, she has only like six shorts in total, so it can't be that. Her Twitter is apparently baron as well.
But random bots in the thousands is hard to believe. Unless... she payed for them.
