Starting fresh as an indie means you have to build up a fanbase from scratch and suffer for a long time hoping that you manage to breach the algorithm, which can take years or worst case scenario, never. To audition for Holostars means you will be starting off with the Holostars fanbase noticing you from the very beginning. No matter what /vt/ says, there's still at least 3k viewers across all the EN boys that do watch streams. That's more than you could possibly dream for when you start as an indie.
The question is, do YOU think its worth it? Holostars is not popular by any means. You'll get a small and dedicated fanbase, yes, but there's a high chance that you won't be getting that many SCs since stars fans are usually broke minus a few select whales. Short version (yes really): he went to Japan with his mental already trashed, presumably went cold turkey on his meds (since he's actually fucking crazy), barely streamed but if he did, it was total nonsense. The day of the hyped HQ 6 month anniversary cooking off collab, he streamed himself eating "moldy burgers" and "getting food poisoning" like 3/4 hours prior, and never said anything about the anniversary stuff. The vtuber design can be neat for fanarts, or for setting up lore for the streamer, but otherwise I don't give a shit. They way male streamers can gain traction for me is by being entertaining, skilled, or otherwise interesting. The main issue with Holostars is that none of them have these qualities, not that they exist.

No. The reality is that most people who write shit like that aren't actually paying attention to what they do when the girls aren't involved. Even people on /vt/ are mostly just jumping on the bandwagon. I still remember when people were making all these dramatic posts on /vt/ about how they were gonna shit up Altare's next stream after the Ame karaoke thing. I watched the stream he did after and there was literally one guy who commented about it in chat. He was immediately banned, with 0 acknowledgement, and no one brought it up again for the duration of the stream. They deal with some shit when the girls are brought into the picture, but it's nowhere near as extreme as /vt/ makes it seem since the schizos know next to nothing about the boys themselves. They mostly just use them as an excuse to harass the girls.
