What you never will be is a thunderstorm, an ugly mass that only brings destruction to this world, it hates everything you have created, it asserts itself and commands what is right or wrong upon the sacred land you've created, it's selfish and unconsiderable. how does one do commentary when playing a game, or am i overthinking it.. i feel like either overtalking would feel artificial and not natural for me or not talking enough would end up feeling like its not engaging enough. Im not really normally a talkative person

There isn’t one way to do it. Think about your strengths. Can you endlessly talk about unrelated events or topics while playing the game? Do you want to? Play games you know well or that don’t require much thought and treat it as a background thing while talking. It helps to have notes prepared if you aren’t naturally strong at that. If you just want to react to the game, pick an interesting game to react to and make comments as they come to you. Naturally charismatic or clever people will have an easier time with that style. If you can’t do either, pick something like a visual novel and read the lines out. Show your voice acting chops. Add some comments here or there, respond to chat every now and then, make the story an experience.
tl;dr Play to your strengths whatever they may be or be prepared to practice what you aren’t good at.

That’s what being a streamer is about (unless you’re a pure skill streamer who people watch for sick gameplay mainly, then it’s not important). If you struggle with that, then why do you wanna be a streamer? If it’s because you like the music/singing/idol side then you could just be an utaite and make song cover or even original song and focus on offline content. If it’s art, a lot of VTubers are quiet art streamers and also focus on their portfolio on Twitter, no need to stream games.
But if you wanna be a game streamer, and you actually can’t do the simple task that is yapping while playing a game, you’re lacking a very fundamental skill.
It’s not something that can really be taught, you either got it or you don’t.

You can actually learn it, but not through streaming. Lots of older youtubers used to start their videos with the mindset of "I have to be funny" because otherwise they just wouldn't be able to commentate. Pewdiepie is probably the biggest example of this. It results in a lot of cringe moments usually, but that's just part of the growing pains.
Basically, it's something you should've learned as a kid because of how much time it takes to actually be entertaining, but you can always start now.

The tricky part is vtubing covers such a huge spectrum that it feels like shouting into a crowd that isn’t really looking for the same thing you are. I think that’s why I end up butting heads sometimes. But I’m doing better about focusing on what I actually want out of this, instead of chasing every random metric.

I don't post here anymore, but I sometimes stop in to see if anyone I remember is still around. When I do check in, sometimes I see people here debating why others start vtubing. I see people sharing why they vtube too.
Most often, when it comes to discussing others, people assume it's for money or love. Self-stated reasons tend to swing towards a desire for recognition, or the human drive to set and achieve goals. I don't think any of these reasons are bad reasons. I think it's completely fine.
It makes me feel a bit lonely sometimes not seeing anyone share my reason. I vtube - and vtube specifically, no other medium is the same - because it's the only way to experience a world I've otherwise completely missed out on. For a little while, I get to pretend I'm someone else, somewhere else, in a different time period. I get to pretend that I've lived a different life, under different circumstances. Sometimes it sinks in that none of it is real, like right now. It depresses me horribly. It's like I blink and wake up and I'm all alone again. I want nothing more than to wake up one day and really be that character. I try to act the part at least. Call it all lore and kayfabe. Call it part of vtubing.
It's okay if I keep working on my stories. It's okay if I lose hours, days. I can't bear what's coming. One day I'll dissolve into this and then I'll be happy.
