It’s just becoming more commonplace and normalized.
When you look at regular streamers, only so many of them are massive successes as well.

Anon I realize a vast majority of people on this board are complete fucking retards and think that CCV is the end all, be all when it comes to measures of success/growth but that is far from the truth. Vtubing is in fact on a slow downward trend in the West and yes it applies to Hololive as well. There simply isn't a lot of new blood coming into the fanbase. The overall pool of Hololive fans has remained somewhat stagnant at best over the past ~three years while ID has been tanking hard. Compare that to JP which sees continuous growth. This is even with Cover trying to branch out and push vtubing to become more mainstream. Our culture simply doesn't allow something this niche to have much room to grow so it doesn't.

This is also part of the problem. Vtubing in the West is a fucking mess. In the indie scene you have a bunch of literal whores at the top which prevents growth into the mainstream. Among corpos you have constant drama and backstabbing which, to outsiders looking in, makes the whole thing seem like vtubing only exists as some kind of money laundering scheme. It's not taken seriously by anyone who isn't already a fan of it and the fans are frequently getting burned as you said. That is not good for industry growth.

People like to say "Muh covid boom" but it's not like they were the only vtubers then. The reason why they got on top and stayed on top is:

1. Yagoo's crystal ball. They picked amazing talents who transitioned well as the industry grew and evolved, even though their current job is nothing like what they were initially hired to do.*

2. Management made mistakes, but it learned from them each time. It's not as 'muh freedom' as other corpos, but that makes it stable and controlled instead of unstable and prone to internal collapse and google docs being released. Gen releases are slow because the main things they look for now* are steady grindset and passing a strict vibe check, no toxic grifting whores* who start internal strife because mercury is in retrograde.

*the exception being Council, which we can blame Omega for.

Gura doesn't have the work ethic to survive in a corporate environment(no she didn't last five years, she lasted about one and a half and by the time 2022 came around she was checked out) and she only got picked because she had a seemingly successful channel before becoming Gura. Ame is far too much of a pushover and her burnout could be seen coming from a mile away as soon as it became clear she's completely incapable of standing up for herself.

Myth at least was worthwhile. Ame didn't invent schedules (it was already a thing in JP), but she was a pioneer of other stuff that become industry standard. Gura become GURA and even if she checked out and just treated her audience as an ATM, her fame was still very useful for promoting Cover to broader audiences. Rushia was the same, she didn't last, but her impact while she did was very significant in the JP sphere, she's a big part of why Gen 3 was called the Hostess Gen, they were JP's Myth.
Meanwhile Council was an actual mistake with no historical impact.

I think of the difference as: If Cover had a time machine they would still hire Gura, Ame and Rushia. But they wouldn't have hired Omega or most of Council.
