At VexPo, I was one of the lucky ones that got to see her at the Veizo meet and greet booth. Unlike most, this was limited to ticket allocation and I just about made it in. Many shy or overcome with emotion to the point they grasped to find words to say to her on the mic. Yeah, story wise what shines in ME2 is the journey of recruiting everyone and their individual storylines to build their rapport and allegiance with you. The whole collector plotline that acts as the reason for all of this to exist sucks, certainly. But everything else shines super bright. And the DLC expansion(s) isn't really overrated at all in my opinion, it is truly excellent.

Mass Effect reflects the changes in the Sci-Fi genre.

Mass Effect 1: Traditional Sci-Fi with the hallmark tropes of classics of the genre like Star Trek. The assignable biographic background stuff when building your Shepard, the U.I and colour hues atop of musical tone only helps amplify such feelings.
Mass Effect 2: Like Terminator 2, the Sci-Fi concept is far removed for action and impact. Red and orange becomes the new core colour concept; hinting at a more aggressive and bombastic time. Even the Citadel, which was soothing and clean; has been downscaled to a gritty neon-bar environment.
Mass Effect 3: Sci-Fi in the modern market is mostly CGI and self-loathing. Lashing out at escapism, instead focused on punishment of humanities choices.

ME1 controls are a bit tricky to learn if you come from modern 3rd person shooter conventions, ME2 on the other hand still plays very well by today's standards, too bad several mechanics from the first one were dumbed down or flat out removed, still the story of the first one is very good, definitely worth experiencing it.

The original Mass Effect has almost entirely stat-based/oriented shooting gameplay, with stat based spread and accuracy and a ton of wobble and whatnot. It becomes much more of a genuine third person shooter in Mass Effect 2. And in the remaster "Legendary" edition (many rightfully call it a demaster for a variety of reasons) they change it to turn ME1's shooting mechanics into a straight up third person shooter like the rest of them.

While I'd recommend the original original, if you really can't stand that oldschool more RPG influenced shooting gameplay, just play the Legendary edition version of Mass Effect 1.
