I always give this advice to new artists - don't be afraid to make a mess of lines/splotches. Clean art comes from effort and practice, but the most important skill is to be able to create the desired shapes in the first place. In other words - you might just scribble with a pen for hours, but the goal is to really feel like you understand "what makes the resulting shape good". Once you have that understanding, you can replicate it faster and apply that knowledge to things you haven't practiced drawing yet.

tldr; sketch until you get quick and confident, lineart or paint smudging can wait.

I guess I've just steered away from doing it that way because I have a friend who's an artist, and he never cleans his shit up properly, not really, and once when he was participating in an art raffle and pulled out a piece to give as reference for the character he wanted drawn, he gave the other artist some kind of squiggle-ass bullet hell and expected that guy to understand every single nuance of it that made sense only in his fevered imagination.

The only other thing I can suggest, for digital drawing specifically, is to get used to quickly swapping between your brush and eraser. Once it becomes second nature you will really feel like you're creating shapes and carving them, sometimes at the same time.

thats for you to decide. what tutorials play to your strengths will help you the most. and what your strengths even *are* (e.g. sketchy abstractions or clean and refined linework, realistic or more cartoonish) is also for you to find out.

but do study anatomy. everybody needs to study anatomy. you cant properly fuck with fictitious and exaggerated anime bodies if you dont know how the humans theyre based off of work. use any reference available, use yourself if you have to. and dont be discouraged if the sketch phase looks like shit because even for all my years my first drafts look like a 12 year old made it

focus on making it closer to the original for now so that you can compare it and see what inclinations you have when drawing, then you can practice by finding a reference and redrawing it with the char you want.

Honestly been trying to pin down what's wrong with my own style for months now
I feel like I'm almost there in making it pretty, but
Rigidity, is the word I'd use
It looks mostly correct at this point-- just stiff in a way I've never been able to pin down, and thus fix
Seems like part of it could be the shapes lacking definition in a way-- feels like the angles should be sharper in places
On the other hand, surfaces and shapes that should be softer feel as if they're not soft enough
Might also be the single uniform line thickness that I just can't seem to shake too, who knows

I like that the artists in this thread are helping others and also working to better themselves. Good job drawanons.

try drawing with a bigger brushsize, practice exaggerating the poses or search for the specific pose and see how other artists do it.

for the wrinkles i recommend you rely on shading/coloring for that instead of lines, but it could work if the other lines were thicker and the wrinkles were the only thin lines

I agree with all your points, though I'm not sure how I'd go about exaggerating the poses myself. Studying how other artists do it would help to some extent, I think. I guess just altering the poses more to place more emphasis on some parts? Kanata's butt in this case, probably. Or at least making the pose a bit more dramatic than would be natural for a human being. Sounds obvious typing it out, but this is sort of how I put my thoughts in order.
Brush size would definitely help, too, though most artists I see have a way of varying their line thickness dynamically that I have yet to figure out. That, and the line color seems to blend into the colors of the rendering instead of just solid black.
Line flow is also something I could definitely stand to work on. Or just, whatever that's called when the shapes flow together more "naturally".

This is not chuuba related, but this is one of the more active drawthread and the subject matter is closely related. I need advice on how to render a flat, scrawny torso. I tried a few different things but it just keeps looking like picrel and I can't reset my head. There is something wrong with how it looks, but I can tell what exactly.
