As someone that has been on this site for more than a decade, people have left this thread not because they weren't expecting a schizo or two to come in here, but because the whole thread was full of them.
Imagine walking into the worst thread on /x/ when you came in here expecting people to help you setting up your audio levels for a stream.
And that's when they keep it on thread. If one of them gets obsessed with you for some reason, they follow you outside of here were you are supposed to keep kayfabe and they either start revealing their power level and start causing you trouble with other people or even sponsors or just doxx you directly.
If you come from /soc/ I doubt you care about that, but almost every vtuber cares a lot about their private info, not only for security but because knowing the face behind a character breaks the charm for a lot of people.

At what ccvs would you say your experience as a streamer drastically changes? I don’t think there would be much of a difference between going from 30 to 40 for example. But going from 0 to having one frequently returning viewer is probably huge for most streamers. Maybe going from single digit viewers to 10+ viewers. There’s of course 80 which I think is the partner requirement. So what else is there?

tl;dr: I’d focus on a model that matches your voice and intended content niches, and one that doesn’t draw direct comparison to other existing famous streamers.
To answer your original question: I highly recommend having a model that is two things together. For instance: cat girl PLUS…sushi. Or demon girl PLUS…themed after a specific sin (other than lust which has been done to death.) A good example is Kuromaru. Oni signals he is into Japanese culture. Tactical gear and Western clothes signal he’s an American into tactical stuff and guns. It is extremely obvious what his content is about from just looking at his model. Ruadh is also a standout. Male sexy man, historical fantasy clothing, he’s obviously a sexy guy who does historical and fantasy content.
Avoid having a design that’s too similar to an existing famous talent or someone who has an exceptionally unique model. For instance, cat shark whale girls have been done to death at this point. Certain color palettes are unfortunately heavily associated with certain VTubers so if you use them, you’ll look like a fan instead of a peer. Ironmouse’s design and palette screams 2003 Hot Topic, and is not original to her, but whenever anyone debuts a pink/purple/black demon, they get accused of knocking her off.
You can absolutely do it legally in most cases. I’d avoid doing it so that you avoid controversy and the antis that come with it. Make things easier for yourself.
Consider whether the model would actually look good on screen with an overlay and other UI elements. Avoid going with the standard chroma key colors in OBS and VTS because if you want to do funky stuff with chroma keys, it’ll be harder to do.
I recommend getting a free UI overlay kit, slapping that into OBS. Slap a free Booyh model on top of it. and using the color correction filter in OBS to just do simple color changes to both the model and overlay. Let’s say you wanted to be a red cat girl. What color overlays would work with that? You want to pop out but don’t want things to be too jarring either. Experiment and find out. I’d say I’m personally not a fan of matching monochrome overlay and models because the models melt into the background.
Your model should be brighter (gamma and contrast) than your background so it stands out more. If you’re going to go with, say, a vampire or goth girl model, with lots of black clothes and black hair, this will make it harder to see you against most backgrounds. I’d highly suggest not having a solid black outline of clothing, hair, etc. around your model because you will just melt into the OBS scenes unless you go with a bright background in contrast.
Babinikus are hard to pull off well. Frankly? Most people with Babi models assume they’re a lot funnier and more entertaining than they are, but there’s already enough actually funny Babis that there’s little reason to watch an unfunny one. Lolis have issues with TOS in some places. I recommend going with an oji or ikeman model if you’re male, or normal adult woman if you’re female, just to avoid the TOS issues.
I have a lot of controversial model opinions obviously. Another one is that I really think your voice, model, and content choice should all work together. Skab is a good example of this. His model is clearly tactical themed. He plays tactical games. His model matches his voice. Gobb is another good example. She plays fantasy content. She’s got goblin lady voice. Goblins obviously work with fantasy content. Ruadh is a great example. Model matches voice matches the content, given he does ASMR and fantasy and history content. Grimmi does horror, has a horror design, has a good voice for her model. Ceci has a good voice match for her model, horror is a good match for monster girl.
Finally, not be a /#/monkey, but consider which threads /here/ will end up cross posting you. Skab gets posted to tactical and gets used as the thumbnail regularly because he plays tactical games and the design is fitting for the OP images.

I forgot to answer the question oops. Shit to avoid:
- Anything TOS or that will get you sued. Don’t rig a Shrek. Don’t put Mori Calliope on a shirt. The last two also make you look more like a fan than a creator.
- Face coverings and too many features on the face such as stickers or bandages. I know I mentioned Skab has a good design. He does. But he is at a disadvantage due to the face covering. Face coverings mean people can’t see your mouth/eyes as well or at all, meaning they’ll feel less engaged. I would avoid bangs and other things that get in the line of sight between your face and that of the viewer as well.
- Designs that are too similar to an existing famous VTuber or people on /asp/ if you want to be /here./ I wouldn’t be a short stack goblin girl if you want to be in /asp/ because you’ll get compared to Gobbcubus and might be seen as a knockoff by others.
- Designs that are overdone. I Googled my concepts with the word VTuber and made sure there weren’t too many VTubers like me with my design. It’s not the most unique design ever, but I am told it fits my voice and content and that it stands out.
- Utilization of chroma key colors or too much black in a model because it’ll make OBS and editing stuff harder. You’ll end up blending into any post with a black background if your model is framed in black (e.g. long hair and a cloak.) If you want to use black, consider a dark purple or dark dark navy blue instead. It’s what cartoonists do.
- Hoodies and a lot of standard contemporary or tech wear clothing because it is very generic
- Designs that are overly complex to draws because you won’t get as much fan art and it may be harder/more expensive to get art comms. It’ll also make it harder to plushify you for merch and harder to make emotes of you. If you want an elaborate outfit, make it the alt outfit. By elaborate I mean things like a million hair clips.
- Don’t go for too many extra body parts or extra clothing parts if you want a cheap 3D model later. If you don’t care about 3D, don’t worry as long as it doesn’t make your design too hard to draw.
- Boring designs that are only one thing, e.g. just a kitsune with no other traits, not memorable, not SEO, easy to confuse you with other streamers
- Novelty models like a babi or a Live2D of a photograph, because they’re very hard to pull off. Porcelain Maid works as a babi because it’s lore relevant and they do horror content. It all fits together.
- Shitpost models e.g. sentient poop emoji
