Should indie vtuber or even corpo vtubers start to unionize for better benefits? It's ridiculous that vtubers, essential workers in this time of crisis, are barely making ends meets for their medical bills and other house bills. I don't know what else they can do.

That said, I too have been thinking of maybe starting some sort of union or other organization to obtain group insurance for vtubers. This would require one to obtain an insurance producer license for any state involved: Fortunatly, most states offer reciprocal licensing, so once you obtain one license you can get more: If you pay. NY has its own weirdo insuance system that is incompatible with the rest of the country, so that requires its own special license again, no reciprocity.

In short, not quite worth persuing from my end... yet.

A significant number of EN chuubas are from Canada, Europe, or currently live in Asia. This is an almost entirely uniquely American problem so I don't see what benefit it would have for the others to take strong negotiating stances on things like health insurance.

There's perhaps an argument to be made for collective bargaining in terms of contract fairness but in reality it's such a globalised market that it'd be impossible to really implement.

Are unions without problems or even corruption in some cases? Of course not. And in a couple of professions I don't think they should have the power they have to cover up malfeasance. But they are absolutely miles better than no unions at all. They're the only collective power workers have.

The idea that unions only ever benefit the people running them is just entirely divorced from reality, and even in the individual anecdotes where it's been the case the solution is better legal regulation of unions, not "unions bad".

I went to a 4-year middle-tier public university that cost $22,000 a year in tuition alone, and that was considered cheap. Public transport is shitty, and because nothing is walkable, gasoline is our vehicle tax. And because of poor social support systems and poor worker protection laws, I am forced to divert more of my paycheck into a rainy day fund, further reducing my disposable income.
I once saw a study (probably published 10 years ago by now) that found despite pay and tax differences, the median American and European actually end up having similar "net income" because Americans often pay more out of pocket for expenses that are either cheaper or subsidized by government in Europe. It's a system that benefits the top 10% to the severe detriment of everyone below the median.

That is what buyers' clubs help address such as Solo Health address. They would help provide individual health plans with the same similar benefits to a group plan in that health insurance firms would be less likely to try anything shady and it would be more affordable than buying directly. No. I've worked a union job. My company used to give out regular bonuses for productive employees to keep up the good numbers/metrics. Union guys that weren't getting anything because they would clock in and find excuse to leave early every day or were just shit workers went and complained to the union it was unfair treatment and pay. Union backed them and told the company it was unfair treatment and pay so the company decided to just keep all the money for themselves and stopped giving bonuses union members.
