I used to enjoy watching vtubers purely for the spectacle of seeing an anime character moving around on my screen, but the more time goes on the less immersed I feel because of how stiff and lifeless nearly everybody's models are. It's literally the same problem as seeing motion capture cutscenes in video games. You aren't watching the character as if in an animation, you're looking at a rough approximation of an actor's movements which are then outputted onto a costume. This would be fine if the vtubers were trained mocap actors but they aren't, so basic things like toggling emotes/poses on the fly don't register to them. You can watch a 5+ hour stream and all the vtuber does is stay in a static expression, letting the eye/mouth tracking do the rest of the work while they just sit there. Does the artifice never wear out for a casual viewer? I'm asking this genuinely because I can't understand why this visual element is even necessary in the first place. A fucking sock puppet show is more engaging. I'm aware that some vtubers add various movements to their model to give the illusion of being more dynamic, but that just ends up seeming like the rigger applying a temporary solution to a permanent problem. At some point, once you really stop and think about it, the majority of vtubers are no different from a PNG in the corner of the screen. Yes, they move around hypnotically and it's cute when they laugh but there is nothing else, I mean literally nothing. Sometimes they'll zoom in on their face or put a GIF of their hands on a controller but that's about it. This entire medium consists of people who want to puppeteer as anime girls but do absolutely nothing with what would be pretty amazing technology in the right hands.
