Okay, okay, let's go to the tape:
>What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it.
[...]
>His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings.
[...]
>The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly on to the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall; but still Gandalf could be seen, glimmering in the gloom; he seemed small, and altogether alone: grey and bent, like a wizened tree before the onset of a storm.
[...]
>With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished.
It seems to me that these passages taken together only describe a supernatural shadow/darkness/gloom that the creature projects. The second reference to "wings" is a callback to the first, which is clearly a simile.

If they aren't wings then they are big shadow-flaps for being scary which explains why it can't fly.
Thanks for clearing that up. From now on, the balrogs "wings" will be called shadow flaps.

>My image of the moment when Aragorn Legolas and Gimli find themselves encircled by the Riders of Rohan has stuck in my head, more or less unchanged, since I first read TTT, I'd always wanted to see it rendered as a painting. What I'd hoped to capture here (and only partially succeeded, in my estimation) was a feel for both the land and people of Rohan, and for the moment itself; the tension between the rushing horses and the stable trio, like the calm eye in a spiraling storm, the power and motion of that foremost horse, the endless flat plain and vast, vaulted sky of the riddermark.

>female dwarves have no beards (like they do in the books)
Don't believe everything you read online. Female Dwarves are NEVER described as having beards in the books. They're described as having beards in 'The War of the Jewels' which was written by Christoper Tolkien using unused and unpublished manuscripts. J.R.R. Tolkien even has a compilation of minor writings that where published in 'The Nature of Middle-earth' that directly contradict this. In these he describes Middle-Earth races with beards and concerning Dwarves he said that 'all MALE Dwarves had beards' with no mention of females being bearded at all. It's likely that if he did once put pen to paper and say that female Dwarves had beards in an unused manuscript, he walked this back in later writings. (Something which he did ALL THE FUCKING TIME)

Arda is a horrible, rotten place full of misery and suffering and garbage.
The Ainur are a fucking joke and a bunch of absolute losers.
Their song of the world was so fucking awful that Eru himself was unable to course correct, TWICE, and then finally gave up on it completely and forcefully ended the song.
The elves are a tool created by Eru to both educate and entertain his ignorant children the Ainur.
How convenient it was that the elves came in being on the eastern side of middle-earth and then got dragged and spread across it's breadth by the summons of the Valar, leading to all the fun stories for those same Valar to enjoy.
But of course the Valar need some on Valinor to enjoy up close, the Vanyar are pretty flower vases for the Valar to look at while waiting for Eru to take back the imperishable fire and end the world.
They claimed they were pulled all the elves for their protection, but the first kinslaying occurred on the shores of Valinor.
The Valar lost their twin towers to Melkor and then lose their twin trees to Melkor, they are losers, through and through and could not protect anyone!
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, Morgoth fooled the Valar twice, shame on them.
After all the horrible shit Morgoth did, murdering the elves, torturing them, twisting them into an entire evil race of beings that go on to terrorize middle-earth for the rest of the song of the world. He didn't do it once or twice he did it over and over again, his punishment? locked up for a little while in a jail and then pushed out of arda to sit with all his Ainur siblings and watch the song from outside.
Melkor's life is more important and valuable than the lives of every elf on Arda because the elves are toys.
Fuck the Valar.
