I kind of can't believe it, but goddamn, Shinichirō Watanabe finally made a bad show. The characters are bland and uninteresting, there's so many like intentionally 'emotional' moments except they're all about these side characters that have only existed for ten minutes and there's such a lack of weight that it's farcical, the plot is completely nonsense and full of 'twists' that are either stupidly obvious from the get or completely random bullshit to prolong the story, and (english dub specific ofc) the voice acting is shockingly bad at points, like it's still professional, it's not like the comically bad voice acting that nakeyjakey made a video on, it's just so....uninspired? the voices don't match the characters half the time and when they do it's just...like it's not the overexaggerated anime dub voices, it's the exact opposite. nobody has any real emotion. and just...all of this was supported by a really interesting concept. watanabe's shows always have a neat concept, and this one seemed like a really cool one. but as the plot develops, it takes five seconds of actually thinking about it to realize how bad the concept is. i'm disappointed by the show but even moreso i'm annoyed that i didn't expect it.

Yeah, those explain my lack of entusiasm for the show. I agree they wasted a big potential: they had such a good theme around that magic pill, pain and life. Yet they decided to loose the show into a twisty episodic adventure that's hard to understand and justify. I think it's a way to show even if you have a goal you may need to try in different ways to reach it and it's gonna put you in weird situations and deadends. In the end they find their goal so close and they missed it it's kinda laughable. Unfortunately the whole adventure didn't sum up to a lot, except there is a couple and the people avoided another end-of-world crisis, it's all back to normal.

That said, I did like the theme and the organic animation. It has an interesting sense of realism through its awkward framing and depiction of motion. The action scenes and the songs are nice. Hopefully somebody else take that as inspiration to make a better show with a meaningful plot, characters with depth and continuity.
