Radio personalities would take voice training to learn to speak in a way that didn't damage their vocal cords. I guess it's expected that amateurs who do as much talking or more than a talk radio host would have problems. Of course it's compounded by factors like bronchitis or allergies and the pressure to keep going because it's their income at stake.

It's actually way worse. Most vtubers aren't actually using their natural voice. Some just speak in a higher register than usual but a LOT (even ones you might not expect) are full on using a character voice. What they're doing is less like radio personality work and more like voice actor work. Professional voice actors (and singers) do a lot of stuff to manage their vocal cord health during long recording sessions like taking breaks, doing special vocal tract exercises (SOVTE), and other stuff. They also take precautions and stuff when dealing with scenes that require screams or other straining performances.
Vtubers, on the other hand, will stream non-stop for hours with no breaks (even no small ones because silence is bad), have regular screaming/yelling/laughing fits/etc..., and they'll often do this even if they're sick or have been having voice strain issues. Add to this the gimmick streams like how they'll do those insanely long karaoke streams where they'll sing the same song over and over

or how they'll play through entire games where they voice all the characters. Then add reading super chats on top of that. It's actually an incredible amount of strain go regularly put on your vocal cords.
I'd imagine the situation is worse for indie vtubers but who knows, maybe corpo vtubers aren't getting much in the way of voice health education/support.

The voice acting aspect is definitely a problem for some of the ones that go for outlandish voices.
It's interesting to hear vtubers' voices over time. Miko and Pippa both started out by putting on cutsey voices and now sound pretty fried. It's probably also a factor that a lot of these women are quite young when they start out and probably overestimate their ability to recover.
I like vtubers that sound normal. Yuu has a calming deep voice most of the time but sometimes does different voices briefly. I don't get the sense that she's damaging her vocal cords or anything because she doesn't take it too far.

That reminds me of how Pekora was going on about how she was jealous of Rushia because she could keep up with the overly cutesy persona where as Pekora just turned out to be a comedian. Its also kind of crazy when listening to pre Holo Pekora and hearing her actually trying to pitch her voice higher compared to what it is now, i used to think she was trying too hard when i was first getting into vtubers too.

NTA and I'm not exactly sure what they were asking (I'm just the anon who was saying this line of work puts a lot of strain on one's vocal cords) but there is actually a lot of research on this but this research comes from many different directions so you get contradicting terminology and classifications (e.g., singers classify things based on how they feel while some scientists may classify things based on acoustic events and other scientists based on physical mechanisms).
From the physical mechanism perspective (since the discussion is about physical health), the larynx can change how it operates (by using different muscles/mechanisms) to produce different sets of tones (with some amount of overlap). These sets of tones are called "registers" and humans have four of them (from the singer/acoustic event perspective this number and classification varies). The four registers have lots of names, some of them quite old.
>vocal fry - Lowest register, lowest limits of your voice and often scratchy. This is how Noam Chomsky speaks.
>chest voice (aka: modal, pectoris) - standard speaking register. When singing it produces vibration sensations in the chest due to the lower frequencies.
>head voice (aka: capitis) - Higher than standard pitch, probably the same thing as customer service voice for many people. When singing it produces vibration sensations in the head due to higher frequencies.
>whistle voice (aka: flute, flageolet) - Significantly higher pitch, upper limits of your voice. This is how Minnie Mouse sounds.
The transition between chest and head is also sometimes referred to as a "register" (but it's technically not). This is called middle voice (aka: mixed, guttoris). In general transitions between registers are called passaggi.

You can think of switching mechanisms as being analogous to how a car switches gears. Different muscles are engaged in different registers.
