im not an expert on snake anatomy, but at least i have never heard of them discarding tails like lizards do.
my assumption is that their spine also houses the ... spinal cord. and once that gets fucked with shit is kinda fucked.
then there is also the chance that cats are in their list of natural predators that they will always try to flee from unless they see a window for attack, i remember mongooses ... mongeese? actually hunting snakes proactively as a stable food - doesnt seem too visually dissimilar to a cat to me.
and ofc maybe the snek just bugged the fuck out from incredible pain, i imagine getting your spine nibbled on might throw you off your game somewhat.
