my recent cat would act the same and it is half feral as it comes young from a colony, he can act docile and calm but usually it is very vigilant and doesn't like being lifted or taken in arms, he seems to be very submissive rather than aggressive unless you corner it while he is scared, ups and downs, not too feral yet not to domesticated, can purr and enjoy caresses and playtime but not much other kind of contact
in general not every cat is friendly to strangers they meet for the very first time, some are super friendly, others tend to study you
after two black cats being good boys and a very docile girl who passed away two years ago i thought this little one would comfort me but i guess we both have lot of work to look forward, he follows another family member as if it was the matriarch of the group, almost obsessed by her, also he is very vocal everytime with her around, quite the character
