A lot of interesting stuff ITT.
80s already had deep commercialization and corporate 'taste making' of course, but it felt like the last decade where experimentation and genre-unspecific styles where approved. I mean today anyone can pirate a DAW and start building tracks that are far higher in technical fidelity, but in the 80s you had to really invest yourself in the craft to make any effort in music. That alone worked like a filter.
I'm also noticing that a lot of these artists look very normal, as in: 'not a star', like some artificial person. Even when styled flamboyantly, they still appear imperfect, like blue collar folk.
Digital technology has made life more convenient and music accessible, but it has greatly diminished authenticity and passion.

Some Kraftwerk: first "Computer Love" (German version: "Computerliebe") from their 1981 album Computerwelt / Computer World. The album track is too long for 4chan at over 7 minutes, so webmrel is a shorter live version.

Computer Love was released as a single with the B-side a re-release of their 1978 Das Modell (The Model) - later re-released as a double A-side.

Never heard of them until now; a Japanese Kraftwerk? I just listened to Computer Game (rather bland), and Technopolis (much more interesting). I guess they never got much airplay in the UK and rest of Europe.

There's some good stuff here, but this thread makes me realize what people mean about the '80s being a downturn for music.

People saying that are out to lunch. The 80s had its own unique style and musical explorations. It was a good time for ballads as well.

Dude, it was anything but a down turn. The 80's gave birth to so many great styles of music and a lot of experimentation. Even today you can find many bands that are influenced by that era
