They are definitely feeling adverse emotions, but some people will pick something completely random to lash out at as more of a distraction from the thing actually causing them pain. There are 4 basic functions or "reasons" to every human behavior, positive neutral or negative, and different people can display the same behavior for completely different functions/reasons. The 4 functions are: Escape/avoidance, Access, Attention, and Sensory stimulation. Some people pretend to hate short people for Attention on social media or Access to the monetary benefits of being popular on social media; some people convince themselves to put all their energy into a singular cause like hating short people to Escape/Avoid unrelated adverse thoughts; some people like to be purposely mean/controversial towards others because it creates a "rush" from serotonin/dopamine release which would be Sensory Stimulation.
