The acting and actors are top notch. Effects are indeed what they are because of it's age and budget probably. The overarching story is where it's at and it is known for exactly that, as it's one of the first shows with multi year story arch and real character development.

Makeup department and prosthetics also deserve praise. It must have been a bitch for some of the actors to go through that for so many episodes.
