Christianity dismisses the material world, this is enough for it to be dismissed itself as useless to a people tied to that world by blood. Sought out the dregs of society and promised them the keys to the kingdom if only they abandoned all material and followed the faith blindly. Then you had the entire underclass running extortion and blackmail rings all over the urban areas of Italy, but it wasn't called judaism, and the Aryan Romans weren't used to craven honorless strategies and bold faced lies of the jews, just as the Saxons were caught flat footed by the vicious savagery with which charlemagne's army operated. Wars where hundreds of thousands of christians slaughtered each other over whether a priest sticks up one or two fingers when conducting a blessing. Imagine what they'd do to outsiders.
