Those aren't earthquake lights, those are transformers blowing up. Earthquake lights generally occur slightly before the shaking, above the fault zone, and resemble pale white lights. It's assumed they're a result of electrical energy being released by the rocks under stress, like the piezoelectric spark generator a lot of water heaters use for pilot ignition.

How come those trees have such "shallow" roots? Is this an advantage because it's easier to survive getting partially uprooted instead of thick roots getting ripped off?

No OC, but I guess some reposts are better than letting this thread die. I'll post some that don't show up in the search results recently.

According to wikipedo, a bolide is just a bright meteor. I guess that's what this is.
