I don't buy the timeline switch theory. The cause has to explain away the fact that experts don't seem to get their area of knowledge changed, that it is almost always incidental changes rather than things that actually effects daily life (no one's drive home suddenly changes), and that at most people only notice the periphery of the changes (continents changing shape never come with ecological or historical changes).
It has to be some form of advanced gaslighting/information manipulation by an unknown power. Probably testing the waters at the moment to see how much they can get away with.
