What explains the evil surrounding American folklore? While other cultures are more whimsical?

I think america starts off as a land that makes you freer or more abundant, but then some who are evil deep down become more of what they are over time, and corrupt the entirety. There used to be madmax warrior cult Indians and cannibals. But also Indians with advanced ways of hiding from them.

To be fair if you remove the Disneyfication of the folklore, most creatures that lurk in the forests are usually kind of assholes.
Good chunk of folklore comes down to
>Give them alcohol or food and they won't burn down your sauna or lure you to drown in a swamp.
Only occasionally are they actually kind towards you.

Though American cryptids do seem to be a step or three above European versions in being flat out violent as fuck with zero redeeming qualities.
Maybe it's because Indians weren't exactly the noble and kind people they're painted to be. They were bloodthirsty savages who killed each other in brutal ways and never left the tribal stage.
Yes the white man is really good at violence too, but at least there's the other aspect of white altruism and not being completely irredeemable.
Maybe the paranormal just mirrors our energy.
Over thousands of years indians just kept on acting like chimps and never tried to interact with these creatures on an agreeable level and ended up creating a huge rift between our species.
Then white man turned US into a modern nation in a relatively small period of time and didn't exactly get a chance to form bonds with the paranormal either.
Now what you got is a bunch of creatures that have fed off the Indian's savage energies for ages, and a white man who has no fucking idea what type of beings he's dealing with and how to communicate with them, yet he lives where these creatures used to roam.

You are MASSIVELY underage, or undereducated in European folklore to think euro (or any other non American folklore) as “whimsical” lol
The “pari “as ma behtarab” “jinn” “elves” “faires” are as twisted and crazy as it gets
Like in Middle East (more in foresty mountain areas like Iran Afghanistan) people were so fucking afraid of forests, that they thought sleeping at forest will cause pari to kill you. Not whimsical at all
1- they are almost immortal 2- they don’t sick and when you put both into man or anything else you see how they moral shifts

Just as one example, when a kharazmshai emissary traveled to China to see what mongols did to them, he noted how the ground was blackened from burnt human oil, FAAAR away from the city.
Or how a Muslim commander conquered northern part of Iran, vowing to feed his men with the blood of people of that region (he killed them, mixed their blood with water, used that water to make flour and fed his men)
Hell, just go read about what Jews did to people of Israel killing each and every inhabitants of those cities
In comparison, USA is pretty whimsical and tame when it comes to “killing”
Like the only way I can compare what was going on in Europe Asia and Middle East with modern media, is berserk, and that’s a joke in comparison to the real violence rest of the world had to endure.

Who are you quoting?
And what’s that about thanos?
Oh and if you talking about “hellboy comic depiction of fairies is accurate” what I mean is that it’s based on how fairies were described by locals for thousands of years.
I mean think about it, the only reason we humans feel bad for sick, for suffering, for old etc, the only reason we have empathy, is that we are aware of our own mortality, and understand that ONE DAY it will be us in that very shoes, so we sympathize with their plights.
A fairy that never know suffering, sickness, death etc (or at least majority won’t) can’t and won’t sympathize with your suffering. You think getting kicked in balls real hard is suffering , no matter it’s you or another person, but to a fairy, it’s just hilarious.
In a way, they are psychopath, but unlike human psychopathy which is just delusional (they gonna piss and shit get sick and die like everyone else) their psychopathy comes from real life experience of being impervious to our everyday issues

Old books man
Here is the Muslim one
>Gorgan (now Iran): commander, Yazid ibn-e Mohalleb, is described as having ordered the mass beheading of Persians to the extent that their blood mixed with water was used to power a millstone to produce enough flour for a day's meal for his army.
Old world was crazy. In Europe, one of the Biggest reason siege of vienna held strong (which inspired siege of helms deep in lotr) was that ottomon, just a few days before, attacked a city close to it, promised to let them live if they opened the gates peacefully, only to kill them all.
They were accounts of Greeks revolutionary roasting Turks on fire (like cooking them alive)
Or how in India, British put sepoy revolutionaries inside cannons and shoot them (it wouldn’t shoot them in air, just obliterated them into paste) because those sepoys killed lots of British women and children despite promising to not harm them if they open the gates

Some of the first things I find are relating to the zoroastrians. But I did find the iranian website as one of the sources of that statement. Ebn-e Esfandiar, Tārikh-e Tabarestān, 1320 Sh.
I have not been able to quickly find Tārikh-e Tabarestān. But I must admit, I do not know if I'm reading the information correctly. I do not know I am able to find that book in particular but I have been finding stuff adjacent to it all with the persecutions against the people by the Muslims. Granted... there's lots of history of that. I know of some including the Berber people and of course the Islamic expansion and them reaching Europe.
Honestly, I have been picking up more books on history as I've gotten older. So I guess that will be a dive for me at some point.
I will say though, compared to the old world, it is crazy how "tame" the brutality of the europeans and americans can be when you think back into history. But maybe I'm unaware of what's going on currently.

There are some old growth forests but are extremely remote
I've been to some in north-eastern Europe, it's completely otherworldly, there is a steep vibe change. I've seen things in those forests but not like you would expect. It's not like you walk around and see a werewolf or whatever, but the nature is more alive and present, if that makes sense. You can talk to trees and order insects around, you can extend your arm and something falls into your palm, you can sit down and notice something sitting down with you, or if you're unwanted there will be signs that you will understand and will want you gone. True old untouched forests are something else man, it's a genuine and real alternate dimension, perpendicular to ours and only intersects our dimension in pocket places (like the aforementioned old growth forests). I've heard of a hunter who has been there, and suddenly he noticed something weird, like the colors were more intense and also somewhat different. And as he walked around, he saw like a veil or a mirror, invisible to the eye. And when he extended his arm, he saw his arm disappear beyond that invisible veil. Also all sounds in the forest were completely gone when that happened. You can just imagine walking and simply disappearing beyond one of those veils, without anyone and even you yourself noticing until it's way too late.
And another thing, like for the ancient vikings or Northern Europe dwellers (I hate the term viking) places like ljosalfheimr were real places, not like an after life Christian heaven or hell thing. They were more like, yeah, behind that tree line in the woods is alfheim, don't walk in there. Also big rocks, there are a ton of big rocks in the old growth forests, and those big rocks are giants. Real, true, living giants, you can literally walk past them and not know it. You can be grabbed and disappear in the blink of an eye.

The natives genocided each other for ages. They would raid neighboring tribes, they would take slaves of the men, women and children. There are tribes and cultures in the Americas the West has never know because they were snuffed out of existence by other tribes.

Forest spirits are morally ambiguous and kind of do what they want, just like people.

>The “pari “as ma behtarab” “jinn” “elves” “faires” are as twisted and crazy as it gets
Came here to post this. Nasty little demons that grow like Christmas tree lights or fireflies, almost inviting you in. But they are deeply malicious and unsettling to be around, like a swarm of wasps.

You know how we humans have an instinct to want to kill certain bugs and animals on sight? As if the world would be brighter and safer without them? That's how they feel about us. Even if you met one that could intellectualize not hating you, every fiber of its being would want to eliminate you. Or at best, toy with you.

If you read the Islamic description of Jinn, that are interdimensional polymorphic entities, you would understand. They’re described as mostly living in remote area where there aren’t people. So Northern America with its wide wilderness is a prime location for them, just like Siberia (Taiga forest) which has the same kind of paranormal activities. While Europe is tinier, more urbanized and densely populated, so it’s not a prime location for them even though there are scaries end disturbing stories there.

And they’re generally described as being quite agressive if you enter in their territory. Thus it explain these stories of Dogman, Crawlers, Wendigo or Bigfoot that heavily freak out people or even attack them in some occurrences.

what you are missing is that both of the countries folklore is inherently evil, just a different type. The european stuff is meant/setup to be a warning for the things you should steer clear of, and how to identify something wrong. the land warps it's horrors based on the general views of the people inhabiting it.

>"Gnomes: the products of polygamy, incestuous breeding and coprophilia. It is no exaggeration or hyperbole that all evils of the world are endorsed and committed by gnomes. A gnome feels no empathy, no remorse, no common humanity that separates us from simple beasts. The only "love" a gnome can feel, if you dare describe it so, is that for money. A gnome would sooner sell his own mother for a pouch of silvers than do a single good deed in his entire gaping hole of an existence."

A single gnome could tank a skinwalker and mog it in terms of sheer cruelty. Do you know 'why?' fay creatures compress themselves down to the stature and size of little people? It's to hide the sheer quantities of compressed mana and arcane providence they actually have. Which is a LOT. They are the predecessors of dwarves, and being their ancestors rely mostly on huge magic reserves instead of strength and machinery despite their natural god damn talent for tunneling and digging.

Natives are the ones who told us skinwalkers are bad though and talk about them more than we do.
It isn't western viewpoint on them condemning them.
They say they were shamans who had powers to do good and that the transformation into animals was supposed to be as messengers for the spirits.
But over time these powers came to be used for the the shamans and priests own benefits corrupting them into the dangerous things they are today.
Skinwalkers are created through an initiation through rites by cults of these shamans that still exist.
That is what I directly from a Navajo

No one in this thread has given the correct answer, so here you go:

Gods are tied to both geography and ethnicity. The Gods of the Chinese reside in China, the Gods of the various European races reside in Europe, and the Gods of the American natives reside in America.

The evil/aggressive/hostile vibes of American folklore/cryptids is due entirely to the fact that these are indigenous spirits that have a hostile reaction because European-descended people are unwelcome strangers in this land. A replacement can take place, over centuries, but only if the invading people bring belief in their Gods with them and the colonization of America took place largely in a post-folklore setting where people may have had a toothless faith in the Christian God but past that, brought nothing with them that might have replaced the indigenous spirits.

As such, these spirits were only displaced, shoved out of population centers and into uninhabited wilderness areas where they are understandably unhappy with the descendants of the people who displaced them. Even if, as many have said, European folklore is often very dark, there is at least something of an understanding between the various European peoples and their native spirits, developed over millennia of cohabitation. There is no such understanding for European-descended Americans and native American spirits, only open hatred and hostility.

Northern California and Oregon and Washington have some creepy forests vibes.
it hosts all kinds of folklores like bigfoot and UFOs and witches or spirits. even extending over into Idaho and Northern Nevada desert you have the skinwalker
it also hosts occults that know this for 150 years now. Bohemian Club and their campgrounds north of San Francisco in Monte Rio. Russian river is known for bizzarr happenings. lots of people drown in the strong undertows.

I'm sure you'd think that if you've never made any effort to learn about anything outside of your little bubble. Europe was very good at having lots of soldiers die from disease but this single battle in Ancient China resulted in roughly twice as many combat deaths as the entirety of the Thirty Years' War.

>This battle is infamous for being one of the bloodiest battles in human history, also sometimes considered ''one of the bloodiest battles of antiquity'', because several hundred thousand soldiers were buried alive.

>400k is nothing compared to the casualties of the thirty war
Good thing I specified "combat deaths" then, isn't it? More people died as a whole during the Thirty Years' War because, spoiler alert, it lasted for fucking thirty years and the vast majority of those deaths were from either disease or mercenaries killing peasants.

>they were always exaggerating, same with pajeets
And yet you "people" are always crying about the population size and breeding rates of those two countries. So we have two options here, right? Either you're wrong about how many people live in India and China or you're wrong about how many people die in their wars because that's what happens when a massive country with a massive population enters a total war: massive amounts of people die.

China alone is slightly under 10 million square kilometers, while the entirety of Europe is slightly over 10 million square kilometers. They're pretty close to the same size which means that there's no reason why internal Chinese conflicts shouldn't have casualties on par with inter-European conflicts. And when you look at the historical data without incel cope, that's what you see.

That aside, I understand that you're very insecure but
>the nobility in my country killed a lot more innocent civilians than the nobility in other countries
is really not a good flex, you know?

>Seethe harder. You are brown.
If you can't tell from my grammar alone that I'm not then I don't know what to tell you.

Europe is a sanitized, harmless playground compared to literally anywhere else in the world. The worst you can claim is some periods of civil unrest where mercenaries pillaged the countryside. You realize that this is the permanent state of affairs for large parts off the world, right? The long periods of peace Europe has had between conflicts are historically unknown is most of the rest of the world. Do we need to take a quick trip around the globe?

>North America:
Literal constant warfare that featured none of the concepts of chivalry or morality you might have found in Europe. If you survived a battle or a raid by another tribe, if you lived on the East coast you could look forward to being tortured to death over the course of many days, or if you lived on the West coast, you are a chattel slave until you are worked to death.

>South America:
Do I really need to elaborate? Death cults as religion, human sacrifices and cannibalism, and again of course constant warfare and slavery.

>Africa:
One of the places where the state of unrest found in the Thirty Years' War is how things have been since the dawn of time. There are currently around 40 internal wars in Africa, right now. There has never been a period in recorded history when there weren't multiple wars taking place within Africa. Rape, mutilation, torture, genocide - things that would be historical atrocities in Europe are daily occurrences here.

>Middle East
You could read the Bible alone for a quick guide to the amount of blood that's soaked this land.

>Asia
Cambodia alone shits all over anything Europe has to offer in regards to "cruelty and evil". China is infamous for, among other things, multi-year sieges where soldiers ate civilians to survive. The kind of shit the nobility of ancient China did to their own families alone is cruel beyond anything Europe could imagine.

Natives get snatched up by spooks all the time (see the Highway of Tears). Spend enough time on a reservation and you WILL see some weird shit, and the natives openly talk about a lot of spooky shit.

The spooks in the Americas are still around because the belief and faith in continued up until European contact (and still persists to this day). It's still pretty active in many parts of the country, like reservations, National Parks, forests with rumors or disappearances, urban legends, etc.

I'm not American. Europe has by far the tamest history of any major geographic region. That doesn't mean that Europe has ever lacked for savagery, but that there is nothing that was done in Europe that wasn't done elsewhere.

I don't mean this in the typical sense but this is what you'd call "Eurocentrism". You've never seriously studied foreign history but you've gone into great depth studying the various horrors of European history, such that you imagine they're unique to that region. They're not and, as I said earlier, the various "savageries" of Europe stand out because they're set against a backdrop of long periods of peace and prosperity that have been unknown for much of the rest of the world.

>Male and female captives as well as teenage boys would usually face death by ritual torture at the hands of the Native Americans. The torture had strong sacrificial overtones, usually to the sun. Captives, especially warriors, were expected to show extreme self-control and composure during torture, singing "death songs", bragging of one's courage or deeds in battle, and otherwise showing defiance.
>The torture was conducted publicly in the captors' village, and the entire population (including children) watched and participated.
>To make the torture last longer, the Native Americans and the First Nations would revive captives with rest periods during which time they were given food and water. Tortures typically began on the lower limbs, then gradually spread to the arms, then the torso. The Native Americans and the First Nations spoke of "caressing" the captives gently at first, which meant that the initial tortures were designed to cause pain, but only minimal bodily harm. By these means, the execution of a captive, especially an adult male, could take several days and nights.

>As of 2016, roughly 36.21% (about one-third of the U.S.) is forested. Excluding the U.S. territories, forested land in the U.S. covers roughly 818,814,000 acres (3,313,622 square kilometers).

Folklore is stories around the campfire and useful lessons from the past. Well if you had indians hunting for scalps those stories permiate through the ages. Feathers and furs become claws and skinwalkers. America was a land you could get lost in before the surveillance state took over.

>From the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the modern era, the Wild Man was an anthropomorphic creature in the folklore of the Germanic and Slavic-speaking regions. He was described or depicted as a solitary, extremely hairy, naked primitive man, or one clothed only in moss or foliage. His way of life was considered semi-animalistic and primitive on the one hand, but also paradisiacal and close to nature on the other. Uninhabited or uninhabitable forest and mountain areas were thought to be his preferred habitat.

>Wild men are human and not transcendent beings, i.e. they are not beings from another world, for example the divine world, who can materialize at will in this world and appear and disappear again in different forms. Since Wild Men are unable to do this, they can also be captured by humans. Although Wild Men have superhuman abilities, sometimes even something like magical powers or psychic abilities, they are themselves biological beings who are vulnerable and can be shot at and injured. They can have a sexual and family life. Only in the archaic legends of the Alpine region (mainly Tyrol) do wild men have certain characteristics of spirit beings and nature demons.

>Wild men are usually inferior to humans if their great physical strength is rendered harmless. This can be done by sexual seduction, but also by female virtue, by alcohol, by magic, by fighting them with professional military training and weaponry, by remote weapons or by other particularly intelligent measures. Then they can be locked up and kept in cages like animals, prisoners or lunatics. However, the expectations of unraveling the mystery of their savagery are fundamentally disappointed.

It was only at the beginning of the modern era that the wild men became guardians of mostly metal treasures (a role that had previously been ascribed to the magically powerful and technologically superior dwarves). This was the time when people had to systematically develop the last areas that were still uninhabited in the Middle Ages in order to access the mineral resources that were waiting to be discovered in the mountains, which had previously been shunned as inhospitable and wild. Here they encountered the wildness of nature, from which they were able to wrest their treasures using previously unknown measures. Typically, it is also miners who encounter the Wild Man here for the first time, not hunters as is usually the case.

I'm 2nd gen american from European family with a brit bong wife. I don't think i would call American land cursed but this is definitely a topic my wife and I have discussed before in the difference between between Europe and America.

I wouldn't have it any other way. America feels more vast, powerful and maybe primal in comparison. American history and founding mythos feels more violent but also more majestic and powerful. Like it's destined for either great things or terrible things depending on who is currently steering

I think you are touching on part of what mashed American folklore unique is that it's alot more modern tales, it doesn't have a "muh 2000 year old traditions". What European traditions that did get brought over were chopped up, mixed up and then forgotten only to be replaced by new monsters and mysterious from the atomic age

Consider why we have forest folklore in the first place, why do pagan cultural practice persist in every culture. Cultural practices and folklore exist as a means of warning and protecting children from the danger of the woods. Monsters that live in the shallows of lakes and ponds are warnings to keep toddlers from drowning themselves, "stay back from the edge". Other things are to prevent you from being kidnapped, eaten, or lost. Light and noise to scare off "evil spirits" especially during large festivals and harvest feasts is a practical means of scaring off bears and wolves so that your unsupervised children don't get eaten while you're drunkenly fucking in the back 40. European folklore used to be PLENTY scary and dark, especially German folklore, in a region that was HEAVILY forested and rife with crime during the medieval period. European folklore persists in it's charming state because their forests are now small, harmless and de-wilded. North American forests are still scary as fuck, and the mythos surrounding them is a subconscious interpretation of their lethality. As a field biologist, and avid back packer, the woods are still terrifying sometimes. The forests of Canada can be lethally cold, hundreds of miles wide, and full of several animals that will fuck you up just for encountering them. Culturally we have boy scouts and camping trips to instill a respect for the rules of being in the woods, but all of this still ingrains an understanding that carelessness in the deep woods will get you killed. Our folklore of the woods is based on a deep seated fear of nonspecific mega fauna, getting lost, and dying of exposure.

you are pointing at the exact reason when exposing that we have no scary entities here.

You see, entities are somehow manifestations or forms that take shape following our own imagination. After decades of infantilization of these european entities they have actually devolved or disolved since they have no longer the power of fear and they form was weakeaned by all the disney and infantile books.

Those were done on purpose to erradicate them btw.

>Give them alcohol or food and they won't lure you to drown in a swamp
Hey, I live in north america and have a local legend about this, it's about fairies and a ghost.
So theres a swamp thats known to be infested with fairies and to cross it you need to bring the traditional "please don't kill me" bribe of breadcrumbs or else the fairies will kill you. One day a little girl tried to cross the swamp without the bribe and the fairies went about killing her. She screamed out a lot and lots of people heard but they thought it was a fairy trick (yeah the fairies can mimic people to lure them into the swamp) and left her to die. Now the swamp is also haunted by a vengeful hag ghost that also kills you. Even worse, she doesn't take bribes.

I don't really care to, 90% is insanely mundane and don't even constitute a story. I repost the stories like once a year in October greentext threads, make updates if I get new info from coworkers. I guess if you have specific questions I'd answer, but I'm not dumping everything here. Maybe I'll have some new additions to make this year.

Skinwalker:
>crew of men, been here for years, many have experienced the same things
>some nights are quiet and more oppressive than others
>animals all hide, everything, rats, frogs, geese, deer, skunks, coyotes, everything disappears early evening
>get that "I'm being watched/hunted/I'm not alone" feeling outdoors so we don't typically linger
>one guy reports hearing his name whispered from the trees after someone calls to him
>a couple of guys have found animals acting odd/uncanny, even frightening off the rest of their packs, but for me the animals are always absent
>some guys refuse to swap stories, maybe they just don't want to anger the things
>one night something starts whistling at me, sounds like it's right next to me and circling but there's nothing visible
>k might be a wendigo but it's summer
>biggest panic feeling ever, stupidly keep walking instead of running for cover
>make it to car, still circling me which is even scarier somehow, feel trapped
>drive over and sprint into building, can still hear it
>it's gone 20 minutes later
>realize afterwards there was a smell in the air of rot

On a more serious note, and having introduced the odea of spirits and beings having mobility even interdimensional...
A few nights ago, I saw a being in an alley intersection, had a bluish tincture skintone, and a surprised expression, such as my startle upon seeing him at a distance.
I tried spiritual stabbing, but he had a shield of some kind, he stayed put, I circumabulated the alleys to catch him from another angle, but no trace was left.

Thoughts? It was like a shielded blue zombie in appearance, intelligent, slow mover hard hitter, scan says. Likely from another dimension.

for the most part, just keep your head down and you won't have to.
If they don't know you're there, they can't mess with you.

If they do know you're there, as the old stories go, they can generally be appeased.

Came here to say this.
/pol/ drew correlations between vampires and "juice" pretty early on, and looking at history, it'd appear to be true.
Myths needed to be light enough to keep childrens interest, yet scary enough to make them respect the rules.
>Fairy tales are actually super dark bro, just read Grimms
I honestly don't believe that parents would go around sharing the gory details. The stories exist today for the reason stated above.

Europe has been settled by large scale urban societies for thousands of years, the true forests have long since been cut down or tamed, so the entities within have been dead or weakened enough that people dont take them seriously. The United States has only been settled by urban Europeans for about 300 years, any 1600s settlement is too small to really make an impact. There is still true wilderness in the US, places where the old ones still thrive

I remember hearing it on beyond creepy but I can't find the video it's from
it's from an encounter that two boys had while camping in the woods at night
while they were sitting near the campfire, all of a sudden; a human-sized, cat-like entity walked on two legs to join them around the campfire and politely introduced itself as "Sameel" and had a conversation with the two boys
that's about all I can remember

hear screeching from treeline
"prob'ly just a skinwalker again lol"

> bring out thermal scope
see 8 ft tall deer-man doing a Fortnite emote
heart rate spikes
not from fear, from rage

> "NOT IN MY FOREST YOU DON'T"
magdump into the trees yelling “FREEDOM AIN’T FREE”
cryptid T-poses and catches the bullets

> hear it whisper inside my skull
“your soul tastes like vape juice and regret”
black out

> wake up with MREs arranged in pentagram
trail cam footage shows me doing Fortnite emotes for 3 hours
local sheriff just nods and says
“that’s just the Wendigo sayin’ howdy”

Like the actual American Empire existed for well over 1000 years before the great catastrophes which reshaped our enormous old world giant castles into what now resembles mountains and mesas
so the mountains and running trails we hike have a ton of fucking energy about them

Ah, but the gory details are never as bad as what kids would imagine happened to them.
It's like when the movie finally shows the monster, and it's never as bad as you thought.
