So. I'm in the same camp too. Not because of the fire bombings, although that's also a good reason.
Not only can you make that mushroom cloud shape without a nuke (yes even with tnt) but you can also fake the flash with material like phosphorus or magnesium.
I'd also urge you to look at how fission and fusion even work in nuclear facilities because the process is literally just heating water. But please look at people like Galen Winsor who plunged himself into a pool of waste water and came out fine. I'm convinced that radiation poisoning is part psychological just like how all illness is. (Because Germ Theory is also bogus)
