True light beings are extremely beautiful (if you get close you won't be able to process what you see and you will be scared)
As for the dark you won't notice them even if they're right next to you, despite the fact that they can easily interfere with you or anyone/anything for that matter. For those who can see a bit in the dark (don't know of anyone) looking at "death" immediately makes a human's consciousness collapse. A very very common attack used by next level entities, although it does look like fabricated darkness. The real deal is more intense, more destructive and consumes anything it touches. While the fabricated one touches humans but only "paralyzes" them temporarily. Maybe even the "dark" has levels.
Anyways, in your case you were probably looking at "complete" beings and mistaking them for dark ones.
