They've basically always been like this when it comes to their creativity, but I personally believe after WW2 and the subsequent two nuclear bombings they endured on their homeland, they basically had a huge creative and quite possibility a spiritual boom like no other country has ever seen before, and when creativity booms, you're going to get a bunch of strange themes being explored all throughout their creative media and culture, and that heavily includes occultism, religion, and so on and so forth.
