It comes from roman Latin paganus meaning people living in the countryside outside of cities, where the old customs often were still practiced.

Pagan practices lived on in Europe up to the 19th century, sometimes incorporated into a Christian framework as is often the case. Even today some traditions live on in certain parts of Europe.

Christianity lost all value when it dumped Europeans and their values in the trash. That's why atheism became so common-not because the people changed, but because Christianity did. 500 years ago, it was European to the core.
