Pineal really does come from pinecone, related to the gland's shape.
Pinocchio really does mean Pine-Eye.
The pineal gland really is a vestigial parietal eye that now regulates parts of the brain hormonally.
The pineal gland/"third eye" is connected to spiritual awareness in several occult practices, especially any influenced by the tantric idea of chakras.
And Spiritual Awareness, even in a secular mundane sense, requires that you stop telling yourself lies, stop living a lie, stop being deceived by the lies of others, and stop distracting yourself with intoxication and ephemeral, trivial self-destructive pleasures.
I don't know if Carlo Collodi is intentionally any kind of spiritualist, other than his education at the Colle Val d'Elsa Theological Seminary. Most of his other works are just political satires.
But there's definitely something distinctly Jungian going on here.
