In my understanding, the plane we're on is below the midpoint. There's more dark here than light. Earth is either a prison or an undeveloped society under quarantine in order to protect the rest of the cosmos from its negative influences. Depending on how you see it.

Its more fundamentally geared towards competition than cooperation. But the capacity for cooperation still exists on this plane and there are cooperative societies outside of Earth. And Earth is "quarantined" by beings that exist in higher planes because its a more competitive society. Again at least thats my understanding.

You can look at it both ways I suppose. Personally for me it just is. If anything existence is the prison. But that too is just a matter of perspective I suppose. I don't know. What I do know is that I feel like I'm being punished for things that happened outside of this life. But then I realize that ultimately all the horrible shit that's happened in my life is a direct result of my actions. It doesn't seem to be an equal reaction, just opposite.
