Been here since 07-ish only browse occasionally nowadays. There was definitely an enormous shift in general culture post mobile phone revolution, and then again with the election tourism, in which every edgy 16 year old in the world was advertising 4chan on their socials to spread hekkin based Trump/Kek memes.
One nice thing about 4chan getting taken down for a week was that all the board stats got exposed. This site has definitely declined severely in activity, and looks lower than the stats that moot talked about during one of his send off podcasts, which is pretty grim.

Basically, election tourism spreads like wildfire, /pol/ shit up every board to the extreme, a ton of people leave, election tourists eventually leave, neither come back, you've got what we have now.
Also, the nature of the boards are just different. Most discussion about anything serious is relegated to generals a lot of the time, pretty sure 90% of /x/'s daily activity is in succgen, nobody gen, and the christ-cuck gen.

As for your "theres just less people alive" theory, its factually incorrect. There are more real people on the internet than ever, its just that 4chan's old culture is gone, and the people left with it, on top of that the vast majority of real people on the internet congregate on like one of 3, maybe 4 sites.

In a way, when you think about how congregated in a few places everyone is, plus AI and botnets running rampant over everything else, the internet at large really is dead.

I think it’s a combination of things, mostly that the larger psyop worked and people are way more inclined to hover around on social media than anywhere else because it’s faster. I also think a lot of 4chan’s core user base got tired of it being ground zero for whatever fuckery. I’ve been on this site on and off since 08. It got really bad just before and during gamergate, and then the 2016 election was so miserable that I thought the site was dead for good. I genuinely think the answer is that in the 2010s 4chan was one of the largest propaganda tools (especially of the right) and they got bored with their new toy. I remembered recently that I actually got a hand written letter in the mail around peak gamergate that was basically a “hitler did nothing wrong” infodump pack from an anonymous sender, and it seemed to be aware I had at least been exposed to gamergate rhetoric. I have no idea who it was from or how they got my info, but after over ten years my sneaking suspicion is certain individuals on this site were targeted to spread RW talking points, especially conspiracy-oriented ones into the general culture. Now they don’t need 4chan to do that, the bot infrastructure is complete and AI in the comments section can do that job just fine, on a much wider scale and to a much larger demographic of people. Those extra users weren’t just tourists, a lot of people now are straight up addicted to arguing politics in circles on the internet.

This is the psyop they pushed to stop people talking about what they were doing in their work with the Wuhan lab. I remember it too, as the covid threads became more and more dire the posts saying there was no virus and it was all a psyop started coming in. It seemed like denialist cope at first but in retrospect it was just another psyop itself to muddy the waters as they realized the magnitude of it all. That said, the virus itself is clearly either nowhere near as dangerous as they were hyping it up, or is going to be a long term killer (I remember 5 to 15+ years being thrown around in /CVG/ for how long it might take) which will make its effects virtually unnoticeable in every day life. Real life honestly seems MORE crowded than before. Like there are more cars on the road and more people in the shops than before the pandemic. Online also feels just as busy if you go to the websites where everyone is. But there's way more suspicion with any given post that it might be a bot. As the bots get better it's going to become impossible to tell if it's a bot or not, too.

As for why this website in particular seems deader, as the number of active websites has shrunk and people have congregated around a few central hubs, it's hung on because it's the most active site filling a niche the large main-stream social media and forums won't. That said it's important to remember this place is very old, by internet standards. Its format isn't intrinsically appealing to phone users (most of the internet), it's very limited in terms of media sharing, and a good number of people drawn in by stories or memories of the old culture of chaos and whimsy find a place that's much more stagnant, politicized, and controlled, that a place once filled with the frenetic energy of an edgy and rebellious youth is now a scandalous battleground of the culture war, filled with mentally scarred old hands engaged in a seemingly endless meme war with moneyed interests, the wet splats of heavy shilling the only sound to be heard as shitpost after shitpost is fired across no-man's land.

It's very interesting to me the amount of people talking about how le right wing destroyed the site. I got to /b/ and then found /x/ while underageb& at about 2008. Lots of happy merchents, first exposure to real antisemitism, and first reading of counter-MSM opinions, first time seeing the word nigger hundreds of times on one screen. Back then. It's ironic because the people who left the internet didn't make things any better for themselves or anyone they only made things worse. Abandoning imageboards doesn't mean the government and corporations stop spying on you. It doesn't mean the corruption goes away. It doesn't get rid of smartphones and social media.
