An idea I'm working with currently: I'm generally cautious about framing magic too much in psychological terms, but I do find it useful sometimes as a method of gradually shaking off the straightjacket of an overly materialistic world image. So perhaps one way to approach the idea of magic is that it's working on the subconscious directly, the subconscious being by definition all those parts of yourself you *can't* see. A magical process might be intended as a means of transforming the various presumptions & self-limitations that exist in your mind, that you're unable to reach through more mundane forms of reflection. Thus this is why it often feels like magic "isn't doing anything" - the thing it's actually doing is at a level of being that your conscious mind has blocked off. You can't see it directly, you can just see the effects. You do magic as a means of reconfiguring the subconscious, and a reconfigured subconscious allows you to do all of those things which you desire which seem "physically possible, in theory, but not something I would ever do". This is of course merely one frame.

I mean this does kinda get to a more fundamental divide - from the perspective of Chaos, chaos is simply a lack of fixed dogma. It's an open expanse in which any kind of structure kinda form, endlessly. From the perspective of a particular ordered system there is this tendency however to see chaos as this binary opposite to itself, ie as another kind of ordered system that is just completely opposed in every regard & thus evil. For many (perhaps not all?) kinds of ordered systems there is a great difficulty conceptualizing chaos (if such a thing were possible), and perhaps even a tendency to demonize chaos, as a method of strengthening its own internal structure
