People used to bring animals to powerful people as offerings for their favor, which were useful to them as food or farm stock.

People assumed gods had the same wants, and sacrificed animals to them as offerings. This doesn't aid the gods, and some aren't pleased with it because it's killing without good reason, like consuming for food. They may like votive offerings though, like little sculptures of animals. Aphrodite does.
