The first asked the second who the man was sitting there was. The second replied "Some say he is a holy man. Others say he is a shithead."

Hearing this, the man was enlightened.

What I mean is that people commonly understand meditation to be sitting with their eyes closed, turning inward. This is very useful and good. But you can also practice meditation as you go throughout your day, paying mindfulness to what you do and what you say.

I don't know much about you or about your path, that's why I can't know what kind of book would be best for you or which would most satisfy your spiritual needs. I like the Shiva gita, the upanishads, and the Shiva rahasya. All are available online. Note, I personally do not believe in Hinduism, this reading list is simply the best the religions of the world have to offer.

1. There is no god. There is a spiritual undercurrent which guides the universe. It recycles a lot of matter in order to sustain itself. Things are completely random, what you get out of life is what you make of it. And sometimes, the "meaning" comes from sheer circumstance.

2. Love. I want to find someone who I care for and who cares for me on a deep spiritual level. I want that person to become me and for me to become them, a handshake of spirit and soul before a great merge.

There is nothing worth learning, ultimately, you aren't taking anything with you to the next. Nobody gives a fuck about your 401k, nobody cares how much money you made, nobody will care about how many rituals you completed regardless of how successful you were at it, your path has already been walked thousands of times, if not more. It is well tread. Even if you have a family, within just a few generations, they'll have genetically less in common with you than random strangers.

All you can really do is turn inwards and develop your insight. Maybe you'll make life a little less unbearable for those around you, including yourself, even if briefly. You won't be remembered, but you can make the journey more bearable, that is noble.
