Need help identifying a cryptid
>be me, Summer 2014, 17, fresh out of high school, just trying to figure out what I want to do with my life
>stuck wagecucking at a shitty grocery store, soul-crushing minimum wage existence, thinking about blowing my brains out daily
>driving my clapped-out Chevy Avalanche home, probably around 11 PM
>dead of night, small town highway's deserted, not another soul on the road for miles, just me and the hum of my shitty engine doing a chill 35 mph
>listening to some garbage pop radio, staring straight ahead, mind focused on just getting home so that I can play some video games
>then, for absolutely no reason, my eyes just... flick right, through the passenger window
>and there she is
>standing in front of a patch of overgrown, shadowy bushes, illuminated faintly by the dull glow of my headlights
>naked. completely and utterly stark naked.
>pale as bone, almost translucent in the dim light, like a ghost made of porcelain. Her hair was long, so blonde it was almost white, hanging down her shoulders.
>and she's looking right at me.
>and she's grinning.
>not a normal grin. Her mouth was stretched impossibly wide, from ear to ear. Straight up uncanny valley shit, like something ripped from a creepypasta, or a bad dream given flesh.

>my primal lizard brain took over. "WHAT THE FUCK" explodes out of my mouth.
>my foot slams the brake, not hard enough to screech, but enough to jerk the car violently.
>whipped my head to the rearview mirror, already knowing what I'd see, but praying I wouldn't.
>nothing.
>she was gone. Vanished.
>just an empty stretch of dark road and the same dead bushes. No sound, no movement.
>spent the rest of the drive white-knuckling the wheel, checking every mirror every two seconds, feeling paranoid as hell.
>when I got home, I told my parents about it, and we debated whether or not to report it to the police.
>my parents thought that the woman was possibly mentally ill or perhaps bait being used by criminals to get someone to pull over
>ultimately, we decide not to involve the police
>didn't sleep that night. Still makes my skin crawl thinking about it.
Does anyone know of any cryptids or paranormal creatures matching the description of the woman I saw? Has this happened to anyone else? Over a decade later, I can still vividly recall her face in my mind. It was like pic-related, but the grin was much, much wider, reaching up to the ears.

First thought was Japanese folklore. Sounds like a Yuki-Onna (lit. "Snow Woman").

Second thought was hallucination.

Pale crawlers very common, look it up on YouTube, you will see a couple. I don't think these things are solely physical beings they are able to fade in and out like ghost. They are usually spotted in rural and near forest areas.

OP here. I'll try to respond to some comments/questions.
>>40821591
Yuki-onna? I'll have to do some research on her. Thanks, anon. And there's no way I could've been hallucinating. I slept until noon that day and was wide awake when I got off work.

It's possible that she could have been mentally ill or on drugs, but I swear to God that her grin looked unnatural as hell.

Not OP, but to my knowledge a female crawler has never been seen, nor has any with hair anywhere on their bodies.

OP here again. After doing some research, I can confirm that what I saw was definitely not a pale crawler. The woman I encountered appeared to be young, maybe in her early twenties. She had makeup on and was quite attractive, except for her disturbing grin. Her skin was unnaturally pale, but she didn't look like a crackhead. I would describe her as being of average height and weight.

In other words, we're discussing a being that looks like an attractive, pale, blonde woman with an unnaturally wide smile. I read a Wikipedia article about the Yuki-Onna, and she seems somewhat similar, but not exactly the same.

Not near the coast. Inland. One of the counties near the South Carolina border. The entire area is a sparsely populated, shitty swampland.

I did some more looking around Wikipedia, and I think I figured out what I saw. "Kuchisake-onna" almost perfectly fits the description, aside from being clothed and Asian. The mouth looked EXACTLY like this.

What in the fuck was this doing in rural North Carolina, bros?

you likely were just seeing shit. sounds like some shit a millennial would hallucinate seeing. doubt it's a tweaker because the bitch would've been eaten alive by mosquitos. same reason, it's likely not even a set-up. I''ve seen those in Laredo, TX. a bunch of men and women lying facedown with their hands appeared tied behind their backs next to a van waiting for some poor, emphatic schmuck to rob

the eyes can play some funny af tricks on you. one time i was pulling out of my driveway around midnight (don't ask) and i saw what looked like your typical ghost chick in a ghostly gown, about 5 foot 8" tall right next to my bedroom window on the side of my house. I hit the brakes on my car and was like, "TF is that? What tf is that crazy bitch doing by my window?" I honestly thought it was a real person because my mind doesn't process shit like that like it's a ghost especially if it's outside my fucking house. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was my headlight bouncing off my wall and there was some fog on my front window adding to the effect. Startled me tf out tho

Early last year I started to contemplate and hypothesize the physiology and possible taxonomy of humanoid cryptids, namely the crawlers and what /x/ refers to as skinwalkers. After reviewing the skinwalker stories I noticed that they occurred near bodies of water. That, plus their gurgly attempts at human speech made me think that these are water-borne creatures. Then, last December, pic related was posted.

Now, I'm not necessarily calling what you saw a skinwalker, but I doubt the fact that you are/were in a coastal state and saw something that traditionally exists on an island nation is just a coincidence.

>>40824118
I hadn't considered that she could've been a "White Lady," but it's definitely a possibility. If she was a ghost or something, then the fucked-up-looking mouth might reflect an injury that she sustained. However, I have my doubts that she was a ghost. I saw her within the town limits, standing in front of a fenced-in basketball court, with a bunch of dead-looking bushes behind her and the fence. I've checked local records, and there's no mention of any murders or any other violent deaths having occurred near there. At least, not prior to my sighting of her. There was a man that got shot and killed by a drug dealer at that location years later.

I've heard people tell tales of similar creatures on paranormal podcasts. They seem to always have an impossibly large grin and they trigger a strong sense of dread and fight or flight response sometimes even before the person in question are able to notice their abnormal features. OP I'm not sure how to tell you that you saw a run of the mill angry spirit of the road ghost variety. Probably a woman that got murdered.

This sort of thing is VERY common for those who see spirits often. I've seen quite a few of these. Most of the time you won't see them again, they usually won't follow or cause problems either. I have seen the same ones on certain roads before but that's it.

I'm not trying to belittle or discredit you, or freak you out either. But this is a pretry common paranormal encounter and nothing to worry about.

I no longer live there so the concern of self-doxing isn't a concern, it was a back road. Black Ridge Rd to be specific, I was traveling north-east from Parkton to Hope Mills and I saw it in one of the large swathes of woodland on the other side of the road. Given your location you have three possibilities:
Haint, which imo is about as useful as just saying Yōkai
Boo hag specifically

Or a fox.

Let me explain:

Foxes that develop the earliest abilities beyond just sound mimicry WILL expend the effort to screw around and mess with you. Also, the foxes in your *specific* region are unhappy, vengeful, displaced by BS from developers like Lennar, and are being squeezed into competition with Coyotes. Instead of being bros, the Coyotes have turned on the foxes. Getting the human mouth wrong in exactly the way you described is a beginner move for foxes that can make illusions or shapeshift. But then again, I’ve heard opossums can do some of that too, so…

My vote is Fox. But I also happen to be a Fox, so I want us to be the best at everything including scaring people.

Do you mean “we” as in pervasive /x/ culture because the folklorist push to adopt Yōkai as a loanword since the Protestants ruined the word “demon” (and frankly this board isn’t helping) worldwide has certainly been a thing. Nothing about the etymology of the word is so specific as to mean Japanese-only. Hell, Mizuki himself wrote “Western Yōkai” story arcs. I mean it’s sort of like the term “Kami” in that regard.

Misuse of the term Yōkai to be specific to Japan is probably about the same sort of linguistic sin as saying “Kitsune” when you mean, I don’t know, yōko (妖狐 lit. “Bewitching/Enchanting Fox”) since “Kitsune” really just means fox and rather one is butting up against the ontology of what is a fox.

Which, I guess I should impress I still say this was a shapeshifter that’s used to having a wider overall maw. When you flatten the face out, you then have to later figure out how to squeeze everything back into shape after that. Human mouth shape isn’t going to feel right.
