I put out birb seed
We have three different variety of wood pecker alone that vary in size
The Wood peckers greatly enjoy the suet (mushed together tablets of seed and peanut butter/fat
I just saw a female hummingbird come to feed right after a strong wind and lightning storm rolled through
The females do not have the bright ruby red throat coloring, it is darker greenish
The males have been fighting viciously over the feeders, even though there are two spaced out from one another, they are so territorial over the food, because the food is where the females make the nests at
Control the food, control the poo nani
You would think with enough food availability, the noggin joggin light bulb of competition would cease, and cooperation would take hold
but squirrels can bury twice as many nuts every year as they have the memory capacity to remember hiding locations for food
Also, lots of bird baths and water sources, the birds take lots of bird baths throughout the day and spend a lot of time grooming one another

And if a cat shows up, all of the birds suddenly are butt buddies again and unite and all start chirping together and dive bombing the cat, it is funny
Then when the cat leaves, they go right back to fighting with one another again...the pecking order
Sometimes bread is enough to help :)
