To be a real holy warrior (whether Christian, Daoist, or something else) you definitely need to be chaste, upright morally, and austere, right?

It seems hedonism (and I don’t mean this in a negative way, just a neutral) definitely makes it harder even if your heart and intentions are good. That means fasting, no-fap, regular prayer and meditation is a requirement to get something done.

Or is ascetism only a stage and once you get past it, it’s no longer necessary?

Yes, always good regardless. I'm not saying you have to live life like monks since they have a different calling to yours. But there is a reason why everything revolves around excess sex, hedonism, consumption, and all the bad that comes along with it.
