2 is the best the rest suck especially 4. I'm pretty sure though that 2 onward retcond the lore so maybe 1is the best and the rest suck. Whatever the case I prefer 2.

I got pretty far in SH 3. They're not overly fun. You spend the majority of the time wondering what the fuck to do. Find a key, run around the entire map trying to figure out where the fuck it goes. Find a door it opens. Cutscene. Monster chases you for 30 seconds. Find a bottle cap that unlocks a door you passed 20 minutes ago. Repeat. They have a novelty to them but I personally cannot get through one in it's entirety. Same with resident evil

i think 4 got the short hand of the stick due to being rushed, it has some pretty novel ideas compared to 3 and 1, 2 is my favorite before 4

While overrated and not a masterpiece, they are very entertaining games. Specially 1-4. Without a doubt a must play too, since they are classics from the pop culture at this point. I wish I could play SH1 again but no key on my keyboard can pull out the gun in RetroArch.
No idea about the remakes, Shattered wathever, or those esoteric games made for Java phones. I only tried 1-4 and Downpour.

Are they? Always found it to be very niche and ""obscure"" from the mainstream with SH 2 being the exception and the face of the franchise. Although normies only played it when the remake came out

I’ve played them all and I liked them. I think my favorite is the first one. The fourth is great too, when you’re getting chased by floating ghosts is creepy and the lore is good.

Only 1 to 4 are any good. The rest were made by an american team who didn't understand the lore at all and fucked it up, basically turning the mystery surrounding the town into the typical le scary creepy haunted ghost town were everything can be explained away by le another dimensions

4's problem is that abuses backtracking in it's second half, that's it really. The story would make an excellent horror movie and is a great example of how you can expand the lore in an original way without having to resort to le sacry town wants your soul or wtv

Silent Hill is a Bardo realm for dead souls coming to terms with their Karma. Pyramid Head is the guardian of the threshold that must be over come before one has strength to kill "God", unite with the inner child, and become the Cosmic Man. James "killed" his Anima by living a life dedicated to the material and soulless which is why the monsters of his world were faceless mannequins and grotesque hyper masculine Alphas that dominate them.

2 is the only canon game, the East are goofy ebil cult shadow world plots which are babies first occult themes.

That's only the plot of the second game tough. After the events of silent hill 3 it doesn't make sense for the town to need more random troubled people to harvest their loosh from anymore, that's why every game after 4 is so lame, just a rehash of silent hill 2's plot plus le scary mirrors that take you to le evil dimension or wtv, effectively killing the sense of mystery and aura of the original games

first game is the best across the board, followed by the second. the rest are decent. the movies are shit. silent hill PT would probably have been interesting but overrated. the soundtrack for the first game is flawless, the soundtrack for the second game has individual songs that are extremely good but to me is much less consistent than the first OST.

the biggest thing that warps my viewing of these games is that i played the first one by myself, so in a sense it represents me. whereas i played SH2 with my girlfriend in senior year of high school, doing different endings, and such. we were a bit damaged people and in some ways the game was a vessel in which we mentally explored certain existential symbols and tropes. a very interesting almost jungian-esque exercise. reverse projection. multiple layers of memory, trauma exploration, i'm not even sure how to describe what i'm envisioning, but it's as though each of us had inhabited the games characters and transmuted between worlds, the painful spirit of the ego split into lovers consuming itself in multiple dimensions.
it's very nostalgic in a dark way, the memory of playing it together, like looking down such a long tunnel, all those feelings, and the essence of youth. the sadness. it's so far away.

That could be an issue with the emulator. I use lemuroid ,picrel. I haven't played any sh games with it yet.

4 is the best one story wise, 1 crawled so 4 could run. 3 is okay but didnt get into heathers character, too much teen angst. 2 was and is a borefest.
walters story and insights into the cult was just too fucking good.
