In summer of 2020 I was skating through a crosswalk (I had the right of way/walk signal) on a busy road, and while I got halfway through the intersection I immediately got a sense that something was off and I immediately looked around and saw a car coming in the opposite direction to me turning into the crosswalk.
I didn’t have enough time to slow down or stop or speed up (I knew I was going to get hit), so I decided to brace for impact, and I jumped last minute so that I would be above the hood of the car and hopefully tumble over the vehicle rather than get splattered on the street.
Anyway, while jumping I connect with the hood of the car and immediately slam into the windshield at a high/weird enough angle to get yeeted by the car about 40 feet into the air and 80 feet down the street (I saw the vehicle pass below me after the initial impact, and witnesses and the police worked out the distances) the windshield knocked the wind out of me and then shattered, but I was airborne for a few seconds I caught my balance in the air, righted myself and then fell back down to the ground and landed on my feet, didn’t break my ankles or legs. It felt like I got hit by a stampede of refrigerators, but I was still alive.
I cracked 3 ribs and broke my collar bone, and luckily I was wearing a helmet, because my helmet cracked and split. I literally walked away from the accident. My clothes were tattered, my backpack and skateboard exploded, and my glasses disintegrated on impact. I shouldn’t have survived the impact. The car looked worse than I did. Then I took an uber to the hospital, because I didn’t want to pay $4000 for an ambulance ride half a mile away.
I spent about a month with fucked up ribs, and I have a titanium plate in my collarbone, but I still skateboard to this day.
