It's very difficult for me to consider other people to be "NPCs", because we all look human, I believe the "NPCs" all still have feelings. As children, almost all children display some creativity. Now that you mention Matrix load balancing, I think that maybe what The Matrix does is measure us as we develop as kids, and specifically designates certain kids as player-characters as they demonstrate their aptitude over time. So it's not that you're "born" an NPC, it's that you are "designated" as an NPC as you grow, or rather, fail to grow.
And so I think sometimes what is considered to be "psychosis" by medical professionals is actually, people whose player logged off, having their player return.
I wonder if The Matrix really is somewhat of a documentary, and maybe, the rapid advancement in computing is actually resulting in computational resources that could be dedicated to creating more player characters instead being dedicated to mechanical computer computation.
What pisses me off is that they didn't develop a special communication platform for oldfags, so we're left in the dark wondering what the fuck happened.
