Spiritual Nomad
Is there something inherently wrong or dysfunctional about being a spiritual nomad? I have no fixed belief system, every time I try I either feel like I'm lying to myself or I'm wasting my time trying to be something I'm not.

I relate to this. Every time I try to commit to a belief system, I find myself questioning why I'm doing this and also doubting it. I find myself just knowing there's a higher power and praying to it. Any belief system is simply someone else's conception of the truth. There are as many spiritual experiences as there are people and I believe everyone is on their own journey. There's nothing wrong inherently with just making it up as you go. Find what feels good to you.

sometimes there's something inherently wrong with taking the EASY way. are you trying to take an easy way?

Not intentionally. I approach it like an objective fact. even if I don't know it, it happens with or without my presence. I'm less concerned with allegiance to any specific belief system and more concerned with having something that works. I'm an engineer, it's kind of how I think I guess.

"spiritual" means nothing when you merely think about it
it only has meaning in living
ALL spiritual phenomena is electric in nature - like the taste produced in your tongue, the sound perception in your ears, the touch perception in your skin, the nervous sensation in your forehead, the dew produced in the tip of the leaf,
the more refined it gets - the more "spiritual" it seems

now go do something spiritual (and therefore material) with this insight!

Steve Richards is also an engineer, maybe you could try reading his books and see if they make sense to you. He's written about levitation, invisibility, astral projection and luck. You can find them online if you look on libgen.

There's a scientific aspect to spirituality, things that just "are", but there are also theories, opinions...

That's called following your heart.

And no, there is nothing wrong with it.

Because spiritual knowledge can't be proven most of the time so it feels like a larp believing in something that there isn't really a "point" in believing.
The person of Jesus is the closest we have to a gateway between subjective spirituality and objective material, because examining his historical footprint makes it seem plausible that he validated his claims by raising from the dead. Once you accept Jesus, you gain an objective metric through which to judge other spiritual criteria

God is real, that's all I know for sure. What that means for anyone is no one's business but their own.

Anon, the biggest difference between genuinely spiritual people and what you're doing is they acknowledge that all organized religion seems fake or showy and, like you, develop a sort of indifference to the structured system offered by such organized religions, but, and more importantly, they are deeply Pious. This piety extends to Divinity in general, in all its forms.
Maybe the real issue is you're seeing all of the faults but forgetting to embrace the Divine aspects of (You).

I definitely aspire to be such a person. Because I can see all the good so many belief systems have to offer people, through their faults. But desu I don't know what piety is. I think I do, but my gut says I don't.

What does it mean? What do pious people do? How does piety work when you're not affiliated with any belief system?

Good thread. Also curious on anons' thoughts on the meaning of piety. I believe there is something beyond this world and this life, not necessarily a god, moreso a larger "life" or experience that this one is just a piece of.

You know how you can appreciate Beauty in all its forms but you don't have to fall in love? It's sort of like that; Beauty is something you should always stop and appreciate or admire. You don't have to throw a ring at some waterfall in a nearby park or take pictures of peoples' babies, causing everyone to question your sanity. You should give it its due admiration though. Don't just gloss over it and pretend like you didn't see it. If someone is trashing it, it's your responsibility to clean it up.
Leave her better than you found her, you know?
