There is an energy, or pattern, within matter that people haven't truly figured out yet. This pattern is the baseline for consciousness (or active/engaged awareness).
Complexity of matter in a correct orientation leads to expression of this activated awareness. (for example: a boulder and a skyscraper are made of the same materials, but a skyscraper is infinitely more complex with exponentially more use)
Awareness is not inherently cognizant, consciousness is just perpetual awareness (or aware of being aware). If a creature has a mind without memory, they would be in a constant state of "awareness flux" incapable of comprehension.
Memory and Time introduce and allow awareness to reference, contemplate, and reason.
Over time, this process of awareness and time create a form of metaphysical structure: Harmonic Resonance Structure. This structure is essentially a "soul".

The whole point of being in a body is that a body forces experience through sensations. These experiences are filtered through the Soul and some are collected. A body is best for this because it "forces" attunement. It also means that in a body you don't have to try and self-create your own stimulus. A body just does it naturally, meaning you don't have to fight for particular definitions and understanding.

Through enough bodily experience, the Harmonic Resonance Structure eventually enters a state of stability where it can exist independent of a body. It just takes a lot of experience in order to establish internal constants, like personality and ideals, so it doesn't essentially dissipate in what is the Greater Awareness of the cosmos.
