Yes. They are often characterized as ghosts, although the word "demon" might be more fitting for what they are because they aren't spirits of the dead. There are mentions of them and how to deal with them from every culture around the world, although all of it is dismissed as superstition and retarded "ghost hunters" keep trying to conjure them.
Their presence is known by a feeling of unease, like you're being watched. Dark rooms and shadows will seem darker, silence will be deafening, looking into your bathroom mirror at night becomes a challenge because you instinctively know that you might catch a glimpse of something you're not supposed to see. All these will make you feel worse and that's what the demon feeds on. It gets stronger the more you suffer. Eventually, you'll start "seeing" it. You'll think someone is standing behind an open door, looking at you through the crack. You'll feel like someone is standing nearby when you're alone in a room (most commonly a hallway or bathroom). If you have a pet dog, it might suddenly growl at empty space. You can get a similar reaction from a cat, but demons tend to avoid cats.
Demons tend to target people predisposed to mental illness, as they suffer a lot in life and often have experiences encountering demons dismissed as some kind of delusion (they may even do this themselves when they're feeling better).
It's not that difficult to expel demons as every culture has methods of doing this, but they hate religious icons, they hate prayers and other proclamations of faith, they hate salt, they hate silver, and they hate when their prey shows it that they are alive. The easiest and cleanest method of expelling one is do something which will make your neighbors call the police on you for a noise complaint. You must exert a lot of physical effort and make a lot of noise with your voice. I read some anons on /x/ have even expelled them by masturbating loudly in front of where they feel the presence of the demon.
